Atuona, located on Hiva `Oa is the administrative center for the southern Marquesas Islands.
Until it was replaced by Tai o Ha'e, Atuona was the capital of all the Marquesas Islands.
Atuona was the final home of Paul Gauguin, who died in 1903 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, which overlooks the town.

Atuona harbor is not the most comfortable place we've ever been.
Atuona is pretty much a one horse, one street town with the gendarmerie, a post office, four stores or magazins, two snack bars, a mini-bank, the tiny Air Tahiti office, a museum, a craft shop, and that is IT.
It is the opposite of Atuona, an idyllic paradise with crystal clear turquoise water, no swell, a white sand beach (unusual in the volcanic Marquesas) with palm trees, but no civilization.

While we were in Tahuata, a big ocean swell turned Atuona anchorage into an uncomfortable place.
When we returned to Atuona to procure a few provisions, the anchorage had returned to its mellow state.

We spent another two nights at Atuona before we finally got away, heading to Fatu Hiva, an island made (relatively) famous by Thor Heyerdahl's novel of the same name.

The drive from Atuona to Puamau was over an unpaved proto-road, dug out and carved into the rugged Marquesan mountains and cliffs by the machines of Caterpillar, Case, Komatsu, Hyundai, Volvo, and Mercedes.

It is truly one of the most beautiful landscapes I have yet to set eyes upon.
The Atuona inlet leads its way through very high mountains, the one on the West side being so high I haven't yet seen it's summit which is always in a cloud.
These two mountain ranges tumble into this bay, covered in dense green tropical foliage.
