Emory History | Presidents | Atwood
Atwood was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, in 1912 and earned all three of his degrees from the University of Wisconsin before he was twenty-six.
Atwood had arrived at Emory only to find a large cumulative deficit in the budget, an inadequate endowment, and an undergraduate college in danger of being overshadowed by its surrounding graduate and professional schools.
On this foundation, before his retirement in 1977, Atwood doubled the size of the faculty, increased the student body by 63 percent to 7,334, and broke ground for $150 million in construction—three times the cost of all construction at Emory to 1963.

Atwood’s research in Community of the Cross goes behind the image of conventionalized Moravian Christianity to find a radical, intense and elaborate system of belief and practice in colonial Bethlehem rooted in the writings of the Moravians’ patron, Nikolaus Ludwig, Count von Zinzendorf (1700-1760).
Atwood presents a strong case for the wundentheologie as an expression of the mimetic violence popularized in a religious-philosophical context by René Girard.
Atwood does not dismiss the possibility of pathological fixation on wounds, and he spends some time exploring Freudian perspectives put forward by other scholars of Zinzendorf’s life.

Craig D. Atwood: Community of the Cross
Bethlehem was founded as a “congregation of the cross” where all aspects of personal and social life were subordinated to the religious ideal of the community.
Atwood reveals the deep connection between life in Bethlehem and the religious symbolism of controversial German theologian Nicholas von Zinzendorf, whose provocative and erotic adoration of the wounds of Jesus was an essential part of private and communal life.
Using the theories of René Girard, Mary Douglas, and Victor Turner, Atwood shows that it was the Moravians’ liturgy and devotion that united the community and inspired both its unique social structure and mission effort.
