The Au Sable's birthplace is near the village of Frederic, north of Grayling, in Crawford County.
During the logging boom of the 1800s, the Au Sable was an important avenue for transporting logs from inland to the mouth of the river at Lake Huron, where ships carried timber to markets in Detroit and Chicago.
The most famous stretch of the Au Sable is known as the Holy Water by fly fishermen, an eight-mile flow that starts at Burton's Landing just east of Grayling, and ends at Wakeley Bridge.

"Disturbance to the Au Sable River streambanks due to increasing land development, recreation access, and fluctuating water flows from hydroelectric plants has resulted in increased bank erosion and the input of large amounts of sediment into the Au Sable River," said Thomas Bowes, director of Consumers Power's hydro operations department.
This project to abate perhaps the largest streambank erosion site on the lower Au Sable River is an important step to the ultimate recovery of this highly prized resource.
