Aubrey Herbert was educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford University where he obtained a first class degree in modern history.
Aubrey Herbert married Mary, daughter of the 4th Viscount de Vesci, a member of the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland.
Herbert's mother gave him both a country estate at Pixton Park in Somerset, England with 5,000 acres (20 km²) of land and a substantial villa on the Gulf of Genoa at Portofino.

Afterwards he was an intelligence officer at Salonika, and later in Italy, and in the last months of the war he was the head of the English Mission attached to the Italian Army in Albania, when he had the temporary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
Mackenzie described him thus; “like Falkland, Aubrey Herbert had in the words of Clarendon a ‘flowing and obliging humanity, a primitive simplicity and integrity of life.’”

He was the brother of Lord Carnarvon, who financed the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen, and the son of Lady Carnarvon who in his memory organized the British Albanian Relief Committee.
The Anglo-Albanian Association evolved from a committee first established in London in 1912 by Aubrey Herbert, diplomat, scholar and Member of Parliament, to champion Albania's right to independence, and an Anglo-Albanian society launched in 1918 whose president was Aubrey Herbert and whose secretary was Edith Durham, traveler, author and anthropologist.
After the First World War, it monitored events in The Balkans and was a primary channel through which information on developments in Albania was conveyed to both Government departments and to the general public.

Commissioned on 26 January, 1915, Aubrey Webster served with the 6th Northamptonshire Regiment, a battalion of Kitchener`s "New Army" which, having been raised during the early weeks of the war, sailed for France on 26 July, 1915.
As part of the 54th Brigade, 18th Division, the Battalion moved straight to the Somme, where it was soon holding trenches opposite Fricourt.
It was while attending such a course that Aubrey Webster was accidently killed.
