Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin Naval Series: Master and Commander; Post Captain
Captain Aubrey is certainly what you would call "a sea dog", a man who feels better on sea than on land; the kind of man that, when he wishes to praise a woman he loves, likens her to a 32-pounder (a cannon).
There's also a guide to Persons, Animals, Ships and Cannon in the series, and most surprisingly, a book titled Lobscouse and Spotted Dog, which is nothing less than a "Gastronomic Companion" to O'Brian's work (spotted dog, in case you worried, is merely a kind of pudding).
His secret career as an intelligence agent, and his acting behind the scenes on Aubrey's behalf (in Post Captain), come as somewhat of a surprise to the reader, and are not even known to Aubrey.

Body Building: Books : Post Captain (Aubrey Maturin Series)
Post Captain, the second in the Aubury Maturin series by Patrick O'Brien, is an excellent romp through England, Spain, France and the High Seas.
Despite the title, the focus of the book is more on Stephen Maturin than Jack Aubrey.
For example, on my most recent reading I was especially moved by the scene where Maturin goes to the opera and sees Diana "on display"; his feelings for her utterly change, and his devastation is so great that he sits in the empty theatre until being told to leave by the janitors.

These novels follow the careers of Jack Aubrey, an Officer in the Royal Navy, and his friend Stephen Maturin, a renowned physician and naturalist.
The consistent and rich continuity of the Aubrey novels provides a satisfactory conclusion of the major plots in the story, but it leaves enough threads unresolved that you are driven to dive directly into the next book as soon as possible.
There is a good balance of epic naval battles, tactics, sailing, politics, intrigue, espionage, natural-science and relationships throughout the series.
