After formal education in Gladstone, Laura and Adelaide, for several years Dennis worked in a number of diverse positions, such as a solicitor's clerk, a member of the staff of the Critic (a weekly Adelaide journal), and a hotel barman.
Three editions were required in 1915, and nine in 1916; by 1976 fifty-seven editions had been published in Australia, England, USA and Canada.

Following the trail from north to south the route in the Auburn area would be obvious.
Prior to reaching Auburn the trail leaves the rail corridor and runs parallel to Main North Road before traversing the main street of the town and turning down King Street.
