The ruins of Auchindoun Castle, an L-plan tower house, stand on a hilltop within the earthworks of an Iron Age hillfort.
The castle was built in the mid 15th century by Robert Cochrane, court mason and favourite of James III.
Auchindoun Castle was sacked and burnt in 1591 by the Mackintoshes in revenge for the murder of the Bonnie Earl o’Moray by the Marquis of Huntly and Sir Patrick Gordon of Auchindoun.

The castle is thought to have been built in about 1550 by John Forbes of Towie.
And although it would not have happened at an outpost like Corgarff, in a larger base like Fort George up to one in a hundred soldiers was allowed to marry, and his wife and any family would also live in the barrack room.
From 1802 the Castle was used as a farmhouse, but the Government repurchased it in 1827, this time as a base designed specifically to tackle whisky smuggling and illegal distillation in the area.

The castle is said to have been built originally by the Danes, and a large room in it is yet called "The Danes' Hall".
Little is known of its origin or history, but it is assumed that it belongs to the period between 1000 and 1200, when many forts were erected both as a means of defence against invasion, and as a protection to the surrounding country in the frequent inter-tribal wars.
It was burned down by the Mackintoshes in revenge for the murder of their chieftain in 1500, and afterwards repaired, but is now fallen into ruin under the influence of the weather and the depredations of modern builders.

Massive and three-storied, it crowns a steep limestone rock, at least 200 feet high, which is washed on three sides by the Fiddich, and on the fourth is guarded by a moat; within it contains a noble Gothic hall, its vaulted roof upborne on fluted pillars.
Sir Adam Gordon of Auchindoun, sixth son of the fourth Earl of Huntly, defeated the Forbeses at the Craibstane in 1571, and afterwards burned the castle of Towie; his brother and successor, Sir Patrick, was one of the signers of the ` Spanish blanks ' in 1592, and was slain at Glenlivet, 4 Oct. 1594.
Queen Mary rode by it in 1562; and in 1867 Queen Victoria picnicked on the opposite bank with the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, owner of all the old barony of Auchindoun.

We visited Donvegan Castle and saw the Fairy Flag that was supposed to have been given to the McCleod Clan by the Fairy to protect the Clan in times of danger.
The castle itself was not that big, but the interior had a lot of odd things to look at, besides the flag, and the gardens were beautiful.
The Castle is in the care of Historic Scotland and is open to the public all year round and seven days a week.

The Ogilvie clan held it for some years, but control passed to the Gordons in 1535, who in turn held it for 50 years until the Macintoshes ravaged the castle in 1591 in revenge for the murder of the Bonnie Earl o’ Moray.
Although the castle was restored after the depredations of the Mackintishes, Gordon was killed a few years later in 1594 in the Battle of Glenlivet.
