Auckland Harbour Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bridge took four years to build and was opened on May 30, 1959 by Prime Minister Sidney Holland, with four lanes of traffic, two in each direction.
Several projects either side of the bridge are underway or planned to ensure that the motorway capacity on both sides matches that of the peak time capacity of the bridge, and to enhance the attractiveness of public transport.
The (Auckland City) Council will work with Transit New Zealand, the ARC, and the North Shore City Council to develop and implement measures, designed to optimise the future use of the existing Harbour Bridge and its approaches, for the peak period movement of people.

The generic answer is something like "a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city that offers an abundance of accommodation and activities for the adventurer, the nature follower, the backpacker or the pleasure seeker".
For hedonists in the pursuit of fine food, wine and happiness, Auckland is an induction course into a cuisine-culture described as ‘Pacific Rim’ – which could be expressed on your plate as hot-smoked salmon, char-grilled scallops or lamb shanks on pasta.
The perfect accompaniment might be a buttery, oaky chardonnay produced on Waiheke Island or in the vineyard valleys of the west.

Auckland managed to use ferries to resist the need for a bridge until 1955.
Since its completion in 1959, the bridge across Waitemata Harbour is almost single-handedly credited with opening up the North Shore to rapid development.
By 2000 160,000 vehicles were crossing the bridge each day and now the city is considering adding a second span, or a tunnel so people can get across the harbor.

The Auckland Harbour Bridge was opened on 30th of May 1959 and it took over 200 workers around 4 years to build.
When the bridge was first built it only had four lanes but after a few years they needed to make the bridge bigger to cope with all the traffic so they added two lanes to each side.
They decided to build a harbour bridge because the traffic wanting to go from Auckland City to the North Shore or vice versa was growing all the time and the trip round the harbour through West Auckland used to take hours.

Auckland Harbour Bridge is the first bridge to benefit from a new maintenance policy introduced this year by its owner Transit New Zealand.
The former covered overall control of the bridge maintenance and was awarded to a consulting engineering company which would then prepare specifications for maintaining the protective coatings, among other things.
The winning tender was submitted by Total Bridge Services, which offered three different maintenance systems; a 'budget' system based on copolymer vinyl, a preferred longer life system based on moisture cured urethane (MCU), and a very long life system based on thermal metal spray.

Rather than increase the tolls the Harbour Bridge Authority offered the Bridge to the National Roads Board on condition that it be toll-free.

 Suzy's World: Harbour Bridge
The harbour bridge was built between St Marys Bay and Northcote Point because it was the narrowest stretch of water between the two pieces of land.
It was also beyond the Auckland Wharf area so it would be out of the way of the huge ships that come into the wharf with goods and people.
Because it was the narrowest stretch of water they only needed a short bridge in comparison with the huge bridge they’d need over a wider stretch of water so the costs were kept down.
