On the mainland, the region extends from the mouth of the Kaipara Harbour in the north across the southern stretches of the North Auckland Peninsula, past the Waitakere Ranges and the isthmus of Auckland to the Hunua Ranges and low-lying land south of the Manukau Harbour.
It is bordered in the north by the Northland Region, and in the south by the Waikato Region.
The Auckland Region is governed by the Auckland Regional Council, successor of the Auckland Regional Authority.

The role of the ARC is to protect the region's air, soil and water resources from pollution and to ensure their sustainable use as Auckland develops and its population grows.
The region's overarching blueprint is laid out in the Regional Growth Strategy, developed by all of Auckland's city and district council's in conjunction with the ARC.
To address these the ARC has established a Regional Land Transport Strategy, a Regional Plan: Air Land and Water (notified in 2001) and is leading the development of an Auckland Regional Economic Development Strategy to be launched this year.

 Past horticultural activity in residential areas
Auckland City found that the properties of 4,872 residential owners may possibly be on land previously used for horticulture.
Early in 2005, the ARC applied to the Ministry for the Environment for funding to undertake a soil-testing programme in Auckland city.
The ARC is continuing work in the Avondale area to identify sites that had spray sheds or glasshouses on the property and will approach owners seeking their cooperation in a pilot testing progamme, which will be funded by the Ministry for the Environment and lead by the ARC.

In 1964 administration of the Auckland Centennial Memorial Park and of the Waitakere Ranges water catchment land was taken over by the newly created Auckland Regional Authority, which continued to enlarge the Centennial Memorial Park.
The Regional Authority became the Regional Council in 1989, with responsibility for both the Waitakere Ranges Parkland and the Waitakere Ranges water catchment land.
On April 11 the ARC released its proposed new strategy for the control of weed and animal pests in the Auckland region.

The Auckland CDEM Group was formally established in June 2003 and is a new approach to the way civil defence and emergency management is co-ordinated across the region.
The Auckland Region CDEM Group is made up of a committee of elected representatives from the 7 territorial councils and the regional council.
While the Auckland CDEM Group will be involved in the co-ordination of effort across the region, each organisation in the partnership retains its existing responsibilities for reducing risk, educating people about hazards and how to deal with them, and making sure response and recovery capability is good at a local level.

The existing Auckland Regional Council (ARC) bylaws for the basin do not adequately manage issues relating to navigation and safety of users of the basin.
To address this, Auckland Regional Council proposes to add two new reserved areas to Schedule 7.2 of the existing Auckland Regional Council Navigation Safety Bylaws (Dec. 2000).

 Tahwaranui marine reserve proposal
The Auckland Regional Council proposes to reclassify the Tawharanui Marine Park as a Marine Reserve under the Marine Reserves Act 1971.
In order to overcome this, the ARC is proposing to apply to the Director General of Conservation to change the legal status of the area from a marine park to a marine reserve.
It appears that the ARC is taking the easy option out of its obligation under the Biodiversity Strategy, which demands that local and regional councils actively promote marine reserves in their areas of jurisdiction.

Auckland Regional council is urging the Government to give it a say in national immigration policy - including introducing Treaty of Waitangi tests for immigrants.
Regional planning and strategy committee chairman Paul Walbran said the council was also concerned that too many immigrants were flocking to Auckland, rather than other areas.
Mr Walbran said the council also believed that migrants needed to be more aware of cultural issues, including a knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi and human rights legislation, particularly regarding women and children.
