Referee Byron Moreno, who was in charge of the controversial World Cup second round match between South Korea and Italy last year, returned to action at the weekend in the Ecuadorean second division after a 20-match ban.
Ecuadorean media said that Moreno gave a typically energetic and controversial performance in the match between Universidad Catolica -- namesake of the more famous Chilean club -- and Audaz Octubrino, showing one red card, six yellows and awarding a penalty.
He was continually insulted by Universidad Catolica fans, whose team won 5-1, and almost every taunt could be heard on the pitch at the almost deserted Atahualpa stadium, media said.
