The Audi R8 continues to write motorsport history after the most successful Le Mans prototype of all time celebrated its 50th victory in the 1000km of Spa-Francorchamps.
Victory for Audi Sport UK team Veloqx drivers Jamie Davies and Johnny Herbert sees the R8 reach the milestone over a mere four year period and in only 60 races.
The R8 was the first Le Mans prototype with a pneumatic gear-shift, while Audi developed a unique system that allowed the complete gearbox and suspension unit to be changed in a little over four minutes — something the regulations have forbidden in the meantime.

Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello held off Champion Racing to win the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in the #2 Audi R8 with only a one minute margin of victory after racing for 1,000 miles around Road AtlantaÂ’s 2.54-mile circuit.
The second full-course caution was one hour into the race, and on the restart the #1 car was still leading, with Frank Biela now driving, and Rinaldo Capello in the #2 Audi began pushing back up to second, passing both the Panoz and the Riley & Scott.
The first caution flag came out when two cars hit each other on the back straight, and both of the Audis pitted.

Porsche began developing bog the car in 2000 as a successor to the 911 GT1 car they had discontinued in late 1998, but the project was abandoned.

Lehto and co-driver Johnny Herbert have steered Champion’s 2002-specification Audi R8 to victories at Road Atlanta, Road America and in the last ALMS race in Miami.
Lehto and Herbert had to be content with third and fourth places in the final Driver’s standings after Frank Biela and Joest Audi co-driver Marco Werner recovered to claim third place and take the title with Team ADT Champion Racing netting second in the Teams’ category.
JJ had started third on the 36-car grid but completed the opening lap in the lead, after slipping ahead of the pole-starting Werner on the exit of Turn 1 while the front row starting James Weaver (Lola MG) was instructed to drop behind Werner having jumped the rolling start and soon afterwards retired.

Team mates Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro in the companion R8 had to fight hard until the very last corner of a total of 394 laps: After a collision with the Panoz halfway through the race the diffusor of the number 78 car was damaged.
Nevertheless the Audi trio with their ill handling car defended a margin of just five tenths of a second to the leading Panoz to the finish line.

Emanuele Pirro carries the American Le Mans Series point lead into Saturday's running of Audi presents Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, and the Italian driver wasted no time on the opening day of practice in making sure that his car was at the top of the speed chart.

Given the advances in materials and aerodynamics since the days of Bellof's 1982 Porsche 956, is anyone able to postulate the likely lap time around the Nordschleife if say an Audi R8 (or even a Aston DBR-9) were fielded.
