Topic: Audi RS4

  The RS4 by quattro GmbH
The RS4 has cast off the visual understatement which typifies the S4: the strikingly flared wheel arches, the 18-inch alloy wheels, the front apron extending well down, with its large air inlets, the aerodynamically styled tail and the side sills harmoniously integrated into the body line unmistakably emphasise the character and performance of the RS4.
Audi's engineering experts have taken what was already a very high-performance engine and given even more power and torque to the version used on the RS4.
The front end of the RS4 is dominated by three large air intake ducts: the central aperture is for the water and oil cooling, and those on the left and right are for the charge-air cooling.

Now the latest generation of Audi's permanent four-wheel drive featured for the first time in the RS 4 offers asymmetric/dynamic torque distribution and a self-locking Torsen centre differential, making a significant contribution in enabling the RS 4 with its sports suspension to enter new dimensions in driving dynamics.

Audi's management is well aware that if its company is to win the heart and mind of BMW-man, it needs some successful hero cars.
That's why later in the year, we'll be treated to a drive of the new R8 supercar and why we've just driven the latest RS4 in the U.K. Faster, pricier and more sophisticated than both the M3 and the Mercedes C55 AMG, it poses as the sedan of choice for the driving enthusiast.

KickingTires: Kicking S: Audi RS4 - An S4 With More
Things are more confusing than ever, unfortunately, because Audi now has "S Line" option packages that give A4s suspension upgrades and the appearance of an S car without the muscle to back it up.
The only RS model sold in the U.S., the RS4 ($66,000 base, $73,520 as equipped) looks like an S4, but the only sheet metal it shares are the front doors and the roof.
Though Audis are nose-heavy, which makes the front want to push wide in aggressive cornering, power to the rear wheels has the effect of shifting some weight rearward in a way the 50/50 split can't.

Not as uninspiring as other S-models (simply because the RS4 has lower and stiffer suspensions), but it is no where near the M5 and - may I use this for comparison - Skyline GT-R. Steering, engine response, brake feel and gearshift quality are all inferior.

I first drove the '07 RS4 about this same time last year through the hops-filled Bavarian heartland, and I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about the car nearly every day since then.
The new RS4 may not have quite as much knee-room in the back seat, but it is lighter, more nimble, runs a world-class manual shifter in place of an automatic or paddle-shift 'box, and makes (give or take) only 30 hp less than the twin-turbocharged RS4 from the same 4.2 liters of displacement.
The RS4 is so capable that lately, in the current absence of an E90-based M3, it's been compared directly with the 500-bhp E60 M5, a car that requires a considerably larger monetary outlay and which technically resides in a different class.

Audi claims the RS4 can achieve 62 mph in 4.8 seconds, which is about what we predict the next M3 will do.
Even if the RS4 can't shake an M3 on a road course, it may be able to beat its BMW counterpart on looks--a revised front fascia, larger tailpipes, and lightweight wheels effectively portray a much more aggressive stance than the common S4.

Turning out a wolf in sheep's clothing is their speciality, and in the RS4 there is yet another snapping, snarling beastie out there masquerading as its domesticated A4 cousin.
There are clues to the RS4's true character, but you have to be sharp to spot them on the run: a cluster of exhaust pipes poking out from under the rear, flaring of the wheel arches to fit the low-profile 19-inch rubber, a more aggressive stance and a couple of discreet RS badges.
One of the truly great things about the RS4 — and other similar models that have gone before — is that it is almost as happy bubbling around town in traffic.
