  Audience
Whether you've thought about it consciously or not, you always write to an audience: sometimes your audience is a very generalized group of readers, sometimes you know the individuals who compose the audience, and sometimes you write for yourself.
To illustrate the impact of audience, imagine you're writing a letter to your grandma to tell her about your first month of college.
The assignment may specify an audience for your paper; sometimes the instructor will ask you to imagine that you are writing to your congressperson, a professional journal, a group of specialists in a particular field, or a group of your peers.

 Audience Level [OCLC - Projects]
Such an indicator, generally known as the audience level, is potentially useful for a variety of activities, including the development of new ways to improve information relevance for retrieval, reference services (including readers advisory) and collection development.
Determining a monograph's audience level is difficult because there is no bibliographic practice or standard requiring the inclusion of this information in the bibliographic record, except for the fixed field in the Machine Readable Code (MARC) record and the Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) subdivision often used to identify juvenile literature and fiction.
Audience level filters could be implemented in existing retrieval systems to assist users in finding content based on their information needs.

The Writing Program @ The University of Delaware
Generally, you will be assigned a particular audience for whom to write, one that is easily identifiable (stereotypical, in some ways).
General audience DOES NOT mean an audience which is bland, boring, faceless, opinionless or any other generalized quality that you think gives you the excuse to write bland, boring, voiceless, opinionless prose.
Your audience will determine all the important aspects of your paper, such as which evidence you choose, what order you put it in, and what kind of connotative language is appropriate, as well as what level of formality your prose will adopt.

 Cable TV: Audience
Over all, a close look at the numbers suggests that the audience for cable news, after being basically flat for nearly two years, drifted upward in the last two months of the election campaign to help create a slight uptick in cable's audience year to year.
Given the volatility of cable news audiences, however, that may not be the best way to measure cable's core audience, that is, the audience it gets most of the time.
The sharp, partisan divides between audiences for the three cable channels that became clear in 2004 -Fox News clearly the channel preferred by Republicans, CNN viewers more likely to be Democratic -showed up starkly in ratings for the political conventions, when the parties most plainly presented their case to the American public.

Review -- Audience and Rhetoric   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
One of the more heated of the contemporary debates is whether we should consider audience at all when we write, whether the aim of writing is to develop a genuine voice or to master the conventions of a given discourse community.
The managerial point of view suggests that audience is a passive entity to be acted upon; the writer's search for meaning occurs outside the realm of rhetoric, and rhetoric itself becomes nothing more than the presentation of a message.
In the latter, audience is integral to the composing process.
