Topic: Audience theory

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

  Audience
Some critics of these kinds of theory have argued that the problem is not just with the idea that the media has such obvious effects, but about the assumptions that mass audience theory makes about the members of the audience.
We will now examine some theories of audiences which have used qualitative research to look for a more subtle view of the audience and then look at the ways the advertisers and media producers themselves have changed their methods to go beyond the idea of a mass audience.
Audience surveillance in extreme form is probably still a few years away, but something that is very much with us already is the idea of audiences being the products of television companies.

Conspiracy theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A conspiracy theory attempts to explain the ultimate cause of an event (usually a political, social, or historical event) as a secret, and often deceptive, plot by a covert alliance of powerful people or organizations rather than as an overt activity or as natural occurrence.
However, conspiracy theory is also used to indicate a narrative genre that includes a broad selection of (not necessarily related) arguments for the existence of grand conspiracies, any of which might have far-reaching social and political implications if true.
The term conspiracy theory is itself the object of a type of conspiracy theory, which argues that those using the term are manipulating their audience to disregard the topic under discussion, either in a deliberate attempt to conceal the truth, or as dupes of more deliberate conspirators.

 Audience
An audience is a group of people who participate in and experience or encounter a work of art, literature, theatre, music or academics in any medium.
The audience participation elements are often seen as the most important part of the picture, to the extent that the audio options on the DVD version include the option of callbacks being included in the audio.
Members of the audience are cast as members of the fictional family or as suspects in the mystery.

Audience Theory - An Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
There are a particular set of theories associated with film genre and you can read more about them here.
Audiences recognise these paradigms, and bring a set of expectations to their reading of the text accordingly: the criminal will be brought to justice at the end of the police thriller.
On the one hand, rigorous conformity to established conventions while giving the audience what they want, can actually lead to stagnation and the eventual ossification of a genre as a "they're all the same" judgement is passed.

According to the theory the media is like a syringe which injects ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience who as a powerless mass have little choice but to be influenced.
The theory is called two step because the first step is the media text reaching an individual and the second step is the way that the initial message is interpreted in a social setting.
An audience may be able to extract their own meaning from a text but someone constructed that particular text in the first place.

Audience research has also centered around what it means to go to the movies, a question which moves beyond the meanings which get ascribed to individual films.
Film theory's abstract generalizations about spectatorship often depend upon essentialized assumptions about "archetypal" exhibition practices; theorists compare the experience of watching a movie in a darkened theatre to a dream state, or contrast the focused gaze of the filmgoer with the distracted gaze of the television viewer.
Audience members may appropriate textual materials as the basis for their own cultural creations, including those that represent "very alternate universes," but there is still a tremendous authority vested in the original that withstands most grassroots challenges.

One theory that comes from this is that an audience is vulnerable and can be made to believe all sorts of things if they are told persuasively enough.
Audiences will filter political messages to fit their existing ideological and political stances and it has been found in recent research that there are more significant factors affecting audiences than media texts.
Audiences do tend to be quite active, rather than passive in interpreting political content and all individuals are members of diverse social groups.

 Audience Research
The history of studies of the media audience can be seen as a series of oscillations between perspectives which have stressed the power of the text (or message) over its audiences and perspectives which have stresses the barriers "protecting" the audience from the potential effects of the message.
Undoubtedly, one of Screen theory's great achievements, drawing as it did on psychoanalysis, Marxism and the formal semiotics of Christian Metz, was to restore an emphasis to the analysis of texts which had been absent in much previous work.
During the late 1980s, a further new strand of work developed in audience studies, focusing on the domestic context of television's reception within the household, often using a broadly ethnographic methodology and characteristically focusing on gender differences within the household or family in TV viewing habits.

 The Obstinate Audience Theory
The obstinate audience theory is not only a theory but also a new model of communication.
The obstinate audience theory assumes that there is a transactional communication between the audience and the media.
Audience members may not be actively engaging in the text all the time.

A Motley Vision » This Question of Audience, Part Two
Writer-focused audience theories position the writer center stage in both the writer-audience relationship and in the creative process.  Indeed, it is to the writer’s shapely role that most literary critics’ eyes inevitably rove.
I figure that what the audience is really responding to are the ideas and impressions that crop up in their own heads while reading the post.
And clearly audience silence, as you have perceived it, has had an effect on you and your writing.

 Mise-en-Scene @ Directing with Anatoly
It has now been understood and accepted that staging is not the mere physical uttering of a text with the appropriate intonation so that all can grasp the correct meaning; it is creating contexts of utterance in which the exchanged between verbal and nonverbal elements can take place.
But his emphasis on dual agency (artists and audience) elucidates the essential role of the audience in the 'meaning creation' loop that is the mise en scene, which Pavis defines as "the bringing together or confrontation, in a given space and time, of different signifying systems, for an audience".
A theory of mise en scene holds that the actor does not have to carry out the stage directions as stipulated in the text; nor does the director need to faithfully adhere to the writer's intentions.

How do newspaper embrace a web 2.0 audience | Theory B
Last week at our Global Economic class at Stern, we just discussed the “matching “ effect when people with certain amount of skills and technology get together they can complement each other and enhance the total productivity factor (TFP) of a city/country, thus raising the GDP production function curve upward.
Internet, and particularly web 2.0, is a perfect tool to “get together” people free of physical location, in which case technology can improve the efficiency of learning knowledge among an informed and networked audience as a whole.
This sounds great in theory as the flow of information can enhance knowledge of countries globally and allow for cooperation between people in different areas.

What is an Active Audience Theory Free Essay
This theory offers the notion of small groups or individuals ‘actively’ constructing their own interpretations and the meaning of the world.
The implication is that the media do not have any effects on audiences because people interpret the media’s messages in many different ways and according to their own prejudices.
People can apparently live in what amounts to a sealed space of thought and language creating their own versions of what is taken to be real on the basis of pre-existing beliefs or values (rather as football supporters are alleged to ‘see’ only the fouls committed by the other side)
