Consequently, a second of digital audio can represent any combination of frequencies, to the limit of both the sampling rate (how many of these amplitudes per second) and the bit depth (how much data represents each amplitude).
Taking standard CD audio, we have a format which transmits 44,100 samples per second with a bit depth of 16 bits.
Starting with the bit depth, a 16 bit byte can represent numbers from 0 to 2^16 (65536).

BatchAudio - Batch Audio processing for audio professionals
BatchAudio allows any bit depth to be specified up to 32 bits with storage in either 16, 24 or 32 bit fixed point containers.
Bit depth and rate conversion ratios are calculated on a per file basis, allowing normalisation of disparate bit depths and rates to a single bit depth and rate in one batch process.
You simply choose the conversion settings you require, possibly opting to leave the original bit depth or sample rate unchanged, select files from the list to convert, then hit the Convert button.

 Section Three
If we look again at the figure showing the digital audio recording, we see that the accuracy of the amplitude measurement (the vertical axis) is determined by the bit-depth at which the hardware operates.
As was discussed in the opening lecture, the bit-depth and sample rate at which an audio card can record determines the accuracy of the digital recording.
The bit-depth determines the accuracy with which each sample is taken.

What does the bit depth and sample rate refer to? Dolphin Music
Audio recorded at a lower bit depth will sound grainy and less defined therefore recording audio at 24 bit will be of a higher quality than something recorded at 16 bit.
If we were to record at 24 bit then we would have over 16777216 levels for a slice of audio frozen in a single moment of time.
If something is recorded at 24 bits then it is using more bits in a file and as such the files are going to be much bigger.

 Principles of Digital Audio
Audio files come in a variety of types, which can influence their bit depth, multi-channel organization, compression scheme, sampling rate, organization of bytes high to low or visa versa (called 'Endian-ness') and amount of non-sample information stored in an area called the header in units called chunks.
Digital audio editing programs can often use 20-bit, 24-bit, even 32-bit floating-point or long integer samples to minimize fractional values and the noise introduced when mixing or engaging in other mathematical processes on the samples.
Audio files, which are the storable and editable collection of samples organized in a standard form, can be stored on computer drives, transferred to other computers or samplers, shared on the Internet to be downloaded or played-back in real-time.

 MP3 - Unipedia
Compression efficiency of lossy compression encoders is typically defined by the bit rate because compression rate depends on bit depth and sampling rate of the input signal.
Audio in MP3 files are divided into frames (which have their own bit rate) so it is possible to change the bit rate dynamically as the file is encoded.
Compression ratios for this reference is higher, which demonstrates the problem of the term "compression ratio" for lossy encoders.

As far as your specific example goes, the ratio of increase in sampling rate to allowable decrease in bit depth depends on the implementation, and what kind of noise shaping is done.
You get 2 bits of resolution because the possible results for averaging four binary (0 or 1) values are: 0,0.25,0.5,0.75, and 1.
In other areas where the required output sampling rate is higher, it is not (yet) practical to run at large oversampling ratios, so more bits are used in the front end (and lots of research is done on noise-shaping algorithms!).

A deeper track bit depth does no harm even with 16 bit audio i/o hardware, except higher bit resolutions have lower maximum track counts.
Modern computers are fast enough that you can get more tracks than you can sanely mix even at higher bit depth.
Such digital rounding noise is very low in 16 bit audio, and virtually imperceptible in 24 bit audio.

16 vs. 24 bit Audio Recording Demystified
Today, your audio interface is probably 24 bit and allows you to select sample rate of your choice, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96 and even 192khz.
We are going to talk about bit depth and sample rates, how these translate into storage requirements, and then talk about the subjective differences between the two methods of recording your music.
My advice is to record at 24 bits/44.1 at minimum and go up to a sample rate of 88.2 or 96 if you think your material warrants it (and you have the disk space).

We are going to talk about bit depth and sample rates, how these translate into storage requirements, and then talk about the subjective differences between the two methods of recording your music.
A person who really knows and works with their gear can deliver greater sound quality at 16 bit with lesser gear than a person who just plugs in and goes on top of the line 24/96 recorders.
This brings us to the Bit Rate, or how much data per second is required to transmit the file, which can then be translated into how big the file is. Your CD is 16bit, 44.1 so that is 44,100 slices, each having 65,536 levels.

 Digital Audio/Sound
The two key data elements determining the quality of a digital audio recording are the sampling rate and the bit-depth.
For example, CD quality digital audio samples at the rate of 44,100 times per second (44.1 KHz), and uses 16 bits (2^16 or 65,536 divisions of amplitude) to store each sample point.
Audio compression (also called psycho-acoustic compression) is a much more sophisticated approach that decreases file size by carefully analyzing the frequency spectrum and (1) removing sounds that fall outside the range of human hearing, and (2) removing sounds that are ‘covered up’ by louder sounds.
