Audio codec - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An audio codec is a computer program that compresses/decompresses digital audio data according to a given audio file format or streaming audio format.
Most codecs are implemented as libraries which interface to one or more multimedia players, such as XMMS, Winamp or Windows Media Player.
When used in this manner, the phrase audio codec refers to the device encoding an analog audio signal to a digital audio signal, or decoding an analog audio signal from a digital audio signal.

Advanced Audio Coding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AAC was designed as an improved-performance codec relative to MP3 (which was specified in MPEG-1 and MPEG-2) by the ISO/IEC in 11172-3 and 13818-3.
AAC is a wideband audio coding algorithm that exploits two primary coding strategies to dramatically reduce the amount of data needed to represent high-quality digital audio.
The MPEG-4 audio standard does not define a single or small set of highly efficient compression schemes but rather a complex toolbox to perform a wide range of operations from low bitrate speech coding to high-quality audio coding and music synthesis.

 Audio Codec
Codec is a portmanteau of "coder/decoder", which describes a device or program capable of performing transformations on a data stream or signal.
Codecs can both put the stream or signal into an encoded form (often for transmission, storage or encryption) and retrieve, or decode that form for viewing or manipulation in a format more appropriate for these operations.
The raw encoded form of audio and video data is often called essence, to distinguish it from the metadata information that together make up the information content of the stream and any "wrapper" data that is then added to aid access to or improve the robustness of the stream.

True Audio Codec Software - TTA Lossless Audio Codec - Realtime Audio Compressor
The TTA lossless audio codec performs lossless compression on multichannel 8, 16 and 24-bit data of WAV audio files.
The term "lossless" refers to the fact that such compression results in literally no data or quality loss; when decompressed, the audio file data are bit-identical to those of their originals.
The TTA lossless audio codec allows for the storage of up to 20 audio CDs worth of music on a single DVD-R, retaining the original CD quality audio, plus detailed information in the popular ID3 tag format.

 Audio Codec
Audio Codec '97 (AC'97) is the specification for high-quality, 20-bit audio architecture used in many desktop PCs.
AC'97 defined a high-quality audio architecture for the PC and is capable of delivering up to 96kHz/20-bit playback in stereo and 48kHz/20-bit in multichannel playback modes.
In 2004, Intel released a new spec, Intel® High Definition Audio (Intel® HD Audio), which is capable of up to 192kHz/32-bit playback in multichannel mode.

It is especially important when evaluating audio codec performance to ensure sample clip lengths are long enough to identify objectionable artifacts that would become annoying after sustained listening.
An audio format seeking to deliver a listening experience to the user which is identical to the original CD must be absolutely free of such artifacts, and must perform well enough to produce a satisfactory listening experience over minutes and hours of listening.
Compressing audio to low bitrates always involves a tradeoff between frequency response (the highest notes that can be reproduced by format) and artifact level (the amount by which the frequencies that are reproduced differ from the original signal).
