Audio crossover - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Audio crossovers are a class of electronic filters designed specifically for use in audio applications, especially hi-fi.
An ideal audio crossover would split the incoming audio signal into separate bands that do not overlap at all, and which when added together would give the signal unchanged in both frequency and phase response.
The most commonly used active device is an op-amp and active crossovers are operated at the levels meant to drive amplifiers in contrast to passive crossovers which operate at the high-levels meant for speakers.

Why you can't do without a car audio crossover. - anther great tip from Electronic Shop
A crossover is a filtering device which limits the frequencies that reach a speaker.
But for your car stereo system to perform better and be efficient, you need an active crossover, also referred to as an electronic crossover.
You can vary the crossover points and adjust the level of separate speakers to achieve the best overall sound in your vehicle.

 Audio Allies Definition for: Crossover
A crossover is necessary in a speaker because one driver cannot efficiently handle all sound reproduction tasks across the entire audible spectrum (the sounds distinguishable by the human ear - from around 20 Hz to 20 kHz).
A two-way crossover, for instance, may split the frequency spectrum into a frequency band from 20 Hz to 2 kHz and from 2kHz to 20 kHz.
Active crossovers are adjustable and require power (normally an AC power source from a wall outlet) to operate while passive crossovers are not adjustable (by the user, the factory can set the crossover but cannot change the setting without changing the crossover) and do not require power to operate.

The problem with 1st order crossovers is that the frequency overlap in the drivers would have to always be at least 2 octaves (or more) in each direction from the crossover point.
The Crossover Calculator was used to determine the crossover components.
That is why the values in the crossover tables for 1st, 2nd, 3rd order Butterworth crossovers have slightly different values than what the Crossover Calculator produces.

Car Audio Crossovers, Equalizers, and Signal Processors
The function of equalizers, crossovers, and other signal processors is to electronically change the music signal in some way to make it more usable.
The crossover's purpose is to divide the music signal by frequency and send these frequencies to components "downstream" of the crossover.
For example, in a system with a two-way component set and a subwoofer the crossover would send the low frequencies to the subwoofer's amplifier and the high frequencies to the component speaker amplifier(s).

However, inside your passive crossover are some giant resistors (etc) to attenuate your midrange relative to your woofer, not to mention the giant inductors in your woofer cross.
When implementing high-order crosses, I propose that active crossovers are much more ideal - i.e., it is easier to be assured that you are actually achieving the function you desire when you use tight-tolerant components which operate into a constant load.

Problem with Profile crossover - Club Polk
My brother loaned me his older (to the tune of a few years) California crossover and it works fine with the line level input or the preamp in.
The only difference between the two crossovers (other than age) that I can see is the fact that his has a plastic vs my metal cover, and mine has a rmt lead and his does not.
Since we're using speaker level inputs, my brother thought that maybe the crossover wasn't stepping the signal down enough and the amp didn't like the signal coming into it, but I just don't know.

There are the JBL crossovers using cards: people seem to have good things to say about them, but I'm not sure of the card supply.
I see this as an option I could employ further down the line, simply because of the complexity it adds to the project even though the result may be a simplification of the whole system--a good goal to keep in mind.
Anyway, use a decent variable active filter to dial in your crossover frequencies and then substitute in the passive line level equivalents when done.

Going to a 3-way by adding another crossover at 200 to 300Hz is just asking for trouble in terms of large, expensive caps and inductors, as well as difficult problems with phase shift at frequencies where it is much more audible than the 3.8 kHz of the mid-tweeter crossover.
I didn't need too much additional persuasion to increase the rolloff rate on the tweeter; the one-cap crossover also required the tweeter to be connected in reverse-phase in order to match the midbass units (which have their voice coils about 1.5" behind the tweeter.) I'm not too fond of drivers wired in reverse phase...
There are three adjustable portions of the crossover: the discrete resistor L-Pad (R1, R2) for the tweeter, the tapped inductor (L5) for the midbass, and the resistor in series with the capacitor in the midbass circuit (R6).
