Audio Stream Input/Output - Hydrogenaudio Knowledgebase
Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) is a low latency audio application programming interface designed by Steinberg for high speed communications between audio hardware and software, such as the the interaction between MIDI Controllers and MIDI Sequencers needed by musicians and studio engineers.
ASIO has made its mark as the driver standard for delivering low-latency transfer of digital audio.
This means that hardware supporting an ASIO driver is able to deliver low-latency recording and monitoring to hard disk.

 Harmony Central®: Steinberg: ASIO 2.0
ASIO is a standardized way of describing the communication between audio software and a piece of audio hardware.
For a user, the knowledge that an ASIO driver exists for a particular piece of hardware, is a sign that there will be a performance boost, compared with the same audio card configured to use the Operating System's own mechanism, and often an accompanying latency reduction, shown by reduced monitoring delays.
The Audio Stream In/Out (ASIO) technology has allowed many audio hardware designers to create drivers to link audio hardware to ASIO compatible hosts, avoiding the need to use either operating system support for audio hardware, or knowledge of the inner workings of the ASIO host application.

Furthermore, audio data (since it is usually 44100 16 bit samples per second, per mono track!) can get rather dense, and since music is a real-time art form, this means we must move these massive amounts of data quickly, and in a very reliable fashion.
