Magnetic tape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magnetic tape is a non-volatile storage medium consisting of a magnetic coating on a thin plastic strip.
In the 1980's compact audio cassettes were used with home computers of the 1980s, and digital audio tape was used for backup in workstations.
Most tape systems attempt to alleviate the intrinsic long latency, either using indexing, where a separate lookup table is maintained which gives the physical tape location for a given data block number, or by marking blocks with a tape mark that can be detected while winding the tape at high speed.

Digital Audio Tape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DAT was not the first digital audio tape; pulse-code modulation (PCM) was used in Japan to produce analogue phonograph records in the early 1970s, using a videotape recorder for its transport, but this was not developed into a consumer product.
Later in 1976, the first commercially successful digital audio tape format was developed by Soundstream, using 1" (2.54 cm) wide reel-to-reel tape loaded on an instrumentation recorder manufactured by Honeywell acting as a transport, which in turn was connected to outboard digital audio encoding and decoding hardware of Soundstream's own design.
The format was designed for audio use, but through the ISO Digital Data Storage standard it has been adopted for general data storage, storing from 1.3 to 72 GB on a 60 to 170 meter tape depending on the standard and compression.

Compact Cassette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two stereo pairs of tracks (four total) or two monophonic audio tracks are available on the tape; one stereo pair or one monophonic track is played when the cassette is inserted with its 'A' side facing up, and the other when it is turned over (with the 'B' side up), thus mimicking gramophone records.
The compact audio cassette medium for audio storage was introduced in Europe by Philips in 1963, and in the U.S. in 1964, under the trademark name Compact Cassette.
The cassette was a great step forward in convenience from reel-to-reel audio tape recording, though because of the limitations of the cassette's size and speed, it initially compared poorly in quality.

Making Cassette Tape Loops - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
If you use scotch tape, be sure to scotch tape both sides of the audio tape, and that the scotch tape isn't hanging off the edge of the audio tape.
When you are sure that all of the tape loop is securely around the reels and the various plastic guides, slide the reels up and apart towards their holes until the click into place and can rotate freely.
Common causes of tape loops not playing are scotch tape sticking out from the audio tape, and the two ends of the tape not being lined up well or being joined at an angle.

Dove - Audio Tape and Video Tape
Audio cassette duplication is available using two different methods (including bin-loop duplication.) Blank video tape is available in many popular lengths as well as video duplication from VHS through Betacam masters.
First, the master tape you supply is converted into a bin master (and endless loop tape.) This master loop is fed into a bin which keeps the loop from binding during the duplication process.
Your material is then duplicated over and over onto a large reel of cassette tape with an inaudible signal marking the end of one copy and the beginning of the next.

It is suggested that you do a good transfer the first time, and file the bad master away somewhere, just in case you ever need it again, perhaps in a sealed plastic bag with some desiccant material inside, like a bag of silica-gel, to keep it dry.
The surface of the tape has become gummy and it sticks to the heads and fixed guides of the tape transport, squealing, jerking, and, in extreme cases, slowing down or stopping the tape transport.
