 Auditory System Effects of Albinism
Examined albino (c/c) and nonalbino (+/c and +/+) congenic C57BL/6J mice for the effects of acoustic prestimulation (priming) on audiogenic seizures.
At 16 days of age, albino mice (c/c) displayed susceptibility to audiogenic seizures, but nonalbino genotypes (+/c and +/+) were immune to the convulsive effects of sound.
It is suggested that differential development of the auditory systems in these genotypes is causally related to susceptibility to audiogenic seizures.

Pinpointing The Gene Locus For Audiogenic Epilepsy
Neale suffered from a rare condition called audiogenic epilepsy, in which specific sounds mysteriously trigger excessive discharges in the brain.
Audiogenic epilepsy is a subset of the broader class of reflex epilepsies which can be triggered by stimuli such as flashing lights, reading, writing, startle hot baths, difficult puzzles or simple math.
For the first time, a gene that could be responsible for an audiogenic form of reflex epilepsy has been mapped by Louis Ptácek and colleagues at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Although eventually released by Audiogenic in about 1992, it wasn't the same game at all which was first previewed in Zzap Issue #77.
Audiogenic did not recall any names sadly, and do not have any of the code from this better looking game.
Audiogenic have told GTW that the game was never finished, so Commodore Format have reviewed an incomplete game in this case.

Brainstem seizure severity regulates forebrain seizure expression in the audiogenic kindling model.
PURPOSE: Although sound-induced (audiogenic) seizures in the genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR) initially occur independent of the forebrain, repeated audiogenic seizures recruit forebrain seizure circuits in a process referred to as audiogenic kindling.
In GEPR-3s, audiogenic kindling results in facial and forelimb (FandF) clonic seizures that are typical of forebrain seizures.
Therefore attenuation of audiogenic seizures during audiogenic kindling in GEPR-9s should allow FandF clonic seizures to be expressed.

 Emlyn Hughes International Soccer
Audiogenic Software Ltd., the company behind Emlyn Hughes International Soccer and a number of other computer games was at its time one of the biggest software companies in the UK.
Audiogenic was originally founded by Martin Maynard, but came under Peter Calver it 1985.
Despite its across-platform strategy that saw all of its titles released on multiple different systems, Audiogenic, like most other software companies, faced trouble at the turbulent times of the beginning of the 1990s when the second generation of home computers arrived and many were not ready to adapt to the changes.

FRAXA - Fragile X Research Foundation
Bauchwitz’s work on seizures in Fragile X mice suggests that mGluR5 antagonists may effectively treat a range of symptoms of Fragile X. Much of his current effort is devoted to pre-clinical testing of potential therapeutic agents in the knockout mouse model.
Using MPEP, we have been able to reverse the susceptibility that Fragile X mice have to audiogenic seizures, which are triggered by very loud sound.
In this study, we examined the effect of MPEP, an antagonist of the group I metabotropic glutamate receptor mGluR5, on audiogenic seizures and open field activity of fmr1(tm1Cgr) mice.

Repetition of sound-induced running seizures in freely moving rats led to an appearance and gradual intensification of post-running facial and forelimb clonic convulsions coupled with afterdischarge in the fronto-parietal cortex.
Before the development of these traditional manifestations of audiogenic kindling, an unilateral cortical SD wave began to be triggered by audiogenic seizures.
To estimate the contribution of SD in postictal effects of audiogenic seizures, we compared cortical activity after seizures induced SD or not.

Lesions of the Medial Geniculate Nuclei Specifically Block Corticosterone Release and Induction of c-fos mRNA in the Forebrain Associated with Audiogenic Stress in Rats -- Campeau et al.
Audiogenic stress is known to activate the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis in rats.
We have determined previously that audiogenic stress is associated with a specific regional pattern of c-fos mRNA induction.

Stress and the Hair Follicle: Exploring the Connections   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Investigators showed that in mice audiogenic (sonic) stressor induces appearance of apoptotic cells in resting hair follicles and inhibits keratinocyte proliferation.
Premature termination of hair follicle growth induced by stressor is associated with up-regulation of keratinocyte apoptosis, increased mast cell degranulation, and appearance of perifollicular inflammatory infiltrates of activated macrophages.
It seems interesting to define whether substance P plays a major role in mediating the effects of audiogenic stress on the hair follicle, or other components of the systemic and local stress response (CRH, proopiomelanocortin peptides, glucocorticoid hormones, autonomic neurotransmitters) are also involved in stress-associated hair growth inhibition.

Eccles Institute of Human Genetics - Novel Epilepsy Gene Identified in Mice
This is a common form of epilepsy in mice and is similar to the human reflex epilepsies triggered by stimuli such as strobe lights," said Ptacek.
And within that gene, Ptacek and his colleagues found a single deletion of a DNA base pair that created a stop signal that truncated the normal protein, and rendered it nonfunctional.
Analysis of the MASS1 protein structure revealed that it did not resemble any known proteins, particularly ion channels that are known to malfunction in other forms of epilepsy.

ScienceDaily: New Epilepsy Gene Identified In Mice
The brain protein affected by the mutation is unlike any other known to cause epilepsy in mice or humans.
Although this mouse strain -- in which seizures can be triggered by a loud noise -- has been used in research for half a century, the genetic defect underlying the disorder had been unknown.
Compared to other mouse models of audiogenic epilepsy, where mutations were thought to reside at multiple loci, the Frings mice appeared to be unusual because their mutation was in a single locus.

Methods: Audiogenically susceptible rats of Krushinsky-Molodkina (KM), Wistar, and WAG/Rij strains received repeated sound stimulation (60 dB, 10–80 kHz) until kindled audiogenic seizures were reliably elicited.
Kindled audiogenic seizures consisted of running, tonic, and generalized clonic phases in KM rats (severe audiogenic seizures) and of running and Racine stage 5 facial/forelimb clonus in Wistar and WAG/Rij rats (moderate seizures).
Vehicle, 100, or 200 mg/kg of VGB was intraperitoneally injected 2, 4 and 24 h before the induction of kindled audiogenic seizures.

The effect of delta-sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) on the anticonvulsive activity of a nonprotective valproate (VPA) dose in a metaphit model of generalized, reflex audiogenic seizures in adult Wistar rats was studied.
The animals that received metaphit (10 mg/kg) were exposed to audiogenic stimulation (100 ± 3 dB, 60 s) at hourly intervals.
The results show that DSIP potentiated anticonvulsive effects of a nonprotective VPA dose in a metaphit model of audiogenic seizures without influencing its neurotoxicity.
