Laboratory for Research into Autism: Auditory Perception
Auditory sensory phenomena have been associated with ASD since autism was first identified in 1943.
Difficulties with auditory perception are clinically prominent and can be disabling especially for children, who may become distressed and unable to understand speech in a noisy classroom environment, and therefore find themselves at an educational and social disadvantage to their peers.
Although individuals with ASD and their carers frequently report auditory perception problems, they have received relatively little attention by researchers recently, especially with a view to identifying the possible underlying mechanisms.

Speech perception abilities in these individuals are disproportionate to their hearing sensitivity and reported to be dependent on cortical evoked potentials and temporal processing abilities.
Auditory neuropathy (AN) is recently described hearing disorder characterized by abnormal auditory nerve functioning in presence of normal cochlear receptor hair cell activity [1].
Zeng et al [8] reported the abnormal results on two measures of temporal perception in their group of children with AN: (i) gap detection threshold (identification of silence embedded in within the bursts of noise) and (ii) temporal modulation transfer function (measure of sensitivity to slow and fast amplitude fluctuation).

CAE - Forensic Audio and Auditory Illusions
To understand auditory illusions and how they relate to the field of forensic audio it is important to consider some elements of electronic audio, recording environments and human auditory perception:
Auditory illusions are created by a combining of frequencies and rhythms from device system noise, environmental sonic events, device playback noise, recording tape anomalies and our brain imposing an order on the sonic events presented for interpretation.
Another factor which may create an auditory illusion is environmental resonance within the playback environment, including a resonating plastic case of a playback device such as a small standard cassette recorder, speaker enclosure resonance and wall reflections.

Auditory researchers are less fortunate than their colleagues in visual perception (of static, 2-D scenes at least), since until fairly recently auditory stimuli have been cumbersome to distribute.
Explore the world of auditory illusions on this unique CD by Professor Diana Deutsch, the "Escher of the world of music." Included on the CD are full instructions for listening to each illusion, and the CD is accompanied by a booklet explaining the science behind each illusion.
The text evolved over the past decade in an attempt to convey something about scientific thinking, as evidenced in the domain of sounds and their perception, to students whose primary focus is not science.

Auditory perception is complex and involuted with multiple levels of redundancy and sheer deceit.
This is mostly because timbre has classically been defined in the negative: "Timbre is that attribute of auditory sensation in terms of which a listener can judge that two sounds similarly presented and having the same loudness and pitch are dissimilar"[7].
Auditory depth perception is generally quite poor, and highly dependent on specific sounds and environments.

Assessing Auditory Capacity in Hearing-Impaired Children
Although standardized audiometric procedures are able to describe the presence and degree of hearing loss, there are essentially no clinical measures available to assess speech perception abilities in hearing-impaired infants as they mature.
The means by which to accomplish this objective requires the development and refinement of new behavioral assessment tools to measure speech perception in children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years.
In addressing the aims of this investigation, the factors and their interrelationships that underlie the development of spoken language competence in young hearing-impaired children will be defined.

While most research in the lab centers around echolocation, this research focuses on perception as it relates to social communication.

Since these bats use low frequency social calls and demonstrate vocal learning, high auditory sensitivity is expected in that frequency region.
