  Audrey Wise, 1932-2000
LIKE MANY in the labour movement, I was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Audrey Wise, someone so vigorous that it is impossible to imagine her gone.
Audrey’s obituaries have varied from honest and well-earned praise in the Guardian and the Independent to a surreptitious attack in the Times and a venomous hatchet job in the Telegraph.
Audrey Wise was a wonderful woman and the labour movement is the lesser for her passing.

Audrey told us of her passionate conviction that statistics are needed to inform political decision-making, as the Government should be accountable to parliament which needs information to make decisions.

Audrey not only gave a lifelong commitment to the National Health Service, but also, as a champion of the working classes and the socially excluded, she understood the importance of tackling the wider determinants of health.

Fathom :: The Source for Online Learning
Robert Wise has been a powerful force in American movies for more than six decades, first as editor of several cinematic classics; later, as producer and director of some of the best and most memorable films of all time.
Wise has characterized himself as a journeyman filmmaker--the consummate professional--but his career has been marked with enormous critical and commercial success.
Wise's two most popular, acclaimed (and profitable) films, West Side Story and The Sound of Music, have thrilled, moved and inspired audiences for more than 30 years, and their ability to do so has not dimmed a whit.

Wise became one of the filmmaking communities most outspoken opponents of the Supreme Court's 1973 ruling that redefined obscenity after he had to tone down a sensuous love scene in TWO PEOPLE.
After AUDREY ROSE (1977), a story about reincarnation, Wise wrapped up the decade with his direction of the first screen version of STAR TREK (1979)—a big special effects film fraught with obstacles but handled with the kind of skill that could have only been borne from a seasoned veteran like Wise.

East meets West: Representing the Possessed Child in Frank De Felitta's/Robert Wise's Audrey Rose Literature Film ...
It is this highly syncretic "grab-bagging" approach to religion that informs the treatment of the possessed child in Robert Wise's 1977 film of Frank De Felitta's 1975 best-selling novel, Audrey Rose.
Although clearly indebted to the possessed child phenomenon, which began with the 1971 publication of William Peter Blatty's sensational bestseller, Audrey Rose is more a reaction to and reworking of The Exorcist than a "rip-off," minus the sensationalism, special effects, and vulgarity.
The weaknesses in De Felitta's B-grade novel are inherent in his script for the film and it is Wise's mostly intelligent and restrained direction that transcends its potboiler source.
