Mahagonny formed the basis of the opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny), which expanded and replaced it.
In a series of "songs" the decadence of contemporary capitalist society is shown, with whisky, women and gambling the chief preoccupations of the imaginary city of Mahagonny.
Brecht's title Mahagonny, his own coinage from the German Mahagoni (mahogany), seems to have come to his mind at the sight of Hitler's Brown Shirts at the time of the abortive 1923 Putsch.

Weill considered Der neue Orpheus (1925), a cantata for soprano, violin, and orchestra on a poem by Ivan Goll, to be a turning point in his career.
By this time in his career, Weill's use of dance idioms associated with American jazz and his pursuit of collaborations with the finest contemporary playwrights with the express intention of reforming the musical stage had become distinctive stylistic traits.
The succès de scandale of Mahagonny encouraged Weill and Brecht to continue work on the full-length opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (given its premiere at Leipzig in March 1930).

The story of Mahagonny begins with three criminals on the run from the law.
Mahagonny survives a typhoon at the end of act 1, and act 2 depicts various scenes of debauchery, until Jimmy discovers that he cannot pay his bills.
Then he is sentenced to death (in a court where murderers go free), and discontent destroys the city, which burns as the inhabitants march away carrying placards of protest, although they have nowhere to go.

The first half of the opera narrates the founding of Mahagonny by "fugitives from justice," ending with the inhabitants' brush with nature: a hurricane, which threatens to destroy the city but turns away at the last minute.
As the city rises and later falls, the inhabitants of Mahagonny expressively bemoan their lot (with Italianate ornaments) against a tarantella ostinato.
This was a quick and dirty "Mahagonny," offset only by the affecting diffidence that Jenny (Jane Hammett) brought to her amatory interactions with Jimmy.

Kurt Weill (1900-1950) began his musical career at an early age, working for the theater in Dessau, and then studied under Ferrucio Busoni at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin; by the early 1920's he was already well-established and respected within the German musical and dramatic community.
The empty spaces of the falling sevenths again underscore the abandoned tenement building, and the lonely, plangent minor thirds reflect Sam's brooding contemplation.
I use the word 'realist' in quotes in an attempt to avoid conflation with the more specific defintion of Realist literature; here and throughout this work, I mean to refer only to the casual sense of the word, as I believe Weill also intended it to be used.
