A photograph of the battlefield of Aughrim; this photograph was taken on 20 September 1942 and is part of the Browne collection at Galway library.
The deploying of the regiment from near Aughrim seemed to be rather exposed as immediately the English probed the line at that sector and massed their infantry on it.
The fact that when Mackay was forcing the pass at Aughrim, and the time that elapsed before word was conveyed to Sarsfield, and the coming up of the cavalry a great number of the English must have got through.

At Aughrim, an uneasy Irish "Jacobite" coalition of Gaelic, Norman and "old English" factions, led by the French General Charles Chalmont, Marquis de St. Ruth, fought, ostensibly, to restore the Catholic Stuart King James to the throne of England.
The Irish lost the battle of Aughrim, but were able to prolong the war for another year by their tenacious and desperate defense of the besieged city of Limerick.
Although mostly in private hands, Aughrim battlefield is still farmland, and it is possible to travel along the lines and visualize the ebb and flow of the fight.

The contemporary Gaelic poet Séamus Dall Mac Cuarta wrote of the Irish dead, "It is at Aughrim of the slaughter where they are to found, their damp bones lying uncoffined".

In 1691, the land east of Aughrim village was waterlogged bogland.
To the north, behind where the village church is located today was the ruins of Aughrim Castle, and beside it was a narrow causeway that led across the bog towards Ballinasloe.
And though in Ireland (particularly north of the border), the battle is seen purely in terms of Catholic versus Protestant, the battle was viewed in Europe as a welcome setback to the expansionary ambitions of Louis XIV who was threatening to overwhelm his neighbouring countries, Catholic and Protestant alike.

 RTE News - Dispute over M6 route through Aughrim
The environmental group, An Taisce, has claimed the planned M6 motorway will run through the historic Battle of Aughrim site in Co Galway.
It says the project will be what it calls 'particularly destructive'.
However, the NRA says that steps have been undertaken to avoid any impact to the battle site proper - something it asserts is clear in the Environmental Impact Statement.
