In heraldry, an augmentation is a modification or addition to a coat of arms, typically given by a monarch as either a mere mark of favour, or a reward or recognition for some meritorious act.
It is important to note that the grants of entire new coats by monarchs as a reward are not augmentations, and (in theory) an augmentation mistakenly given to someone who did not have a right to a coat would be nugatory.

In our definition of music we said that one of the main things that separate it from other forms of communication or art is its potential to be a-referential, or better, self-referential.
In other words music does not have to (although it can and often does) point to anything outside its own structures / patterning; it can have 'embodied meaning' and therefore 'be meaningful in itself'.
If self-referentiality is of major significance in music and music has (from experience) a major impact on us, then question (a) becomes even more pressing.

 Halfbakery: Delta notation for music
I think it would be useful to create a new format for music files built from the delta (number of semitones) between one note and the next.
The reason I suggest recording it as deltas (the difference between one note and the next) is that you can compare a melody to the same melody in a different key and the only thing different will be the initial note.
First, in music, the "delta" you're talking about is referred to as an "interval".

 Breast Augmentation (Enlargement) Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery uses saline-filled implants to enhance the size and shape of the breasts.
Augmentation can be performed at any age after the breasts have finished developing, but, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), federal regulations that took effect in May 2000 prohibit breast augmentation for purely aesthetic (that is, non-medical) reasons in women less than 18 years old.
When consulting a plastic surgeon about breast augmentation, women should be prepared to discuss their expectations about the results of the procedure as well as their past medical history and current health, including any family incidence of breast cancer.

This revolutionary approach to music blossomed in the early years of the twentieth century, when Dadaists and Futurists proclaimed that all sound was in effect the material of music.

i'm thinking the kind of music (or just sound, even) in which texture and timbre are far more important than melody and rhythm, which exists as an augmentation of silence rather than a tangible 'musical' presence.
It was apparent to me upon first listening that the element which enabled the acute focus and unusual emotional intensity of this music was the drone, which expanded attentiveness to intervallic relations while eliminating the function of harmonic motion.
What interested me is the effect of music where the tuning systems clash; it is like a body in a state of gradual decomposition'.
