Pierre Nkurunziza of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy, a former rebel leader of the Hutu majority in Burundi, has been elected unopposed as the new President of Burundi by the parliament, the first president chosen through democratic means since the start of the civil war in 1993.
He died on 3 August at the age of 91.

In March 2005 we were tracking 7.8 million blogs, which means the blogosphere has just about doubled again in the past 5 months, and that the blogosphere continues to double about every 5.5 months.
You can see the charts from March 2005 and November 2004 to get an idea of how this is increasing, although all the data is included on the chart above.
Later in the week I'll also describe the rise of tags, the increase in spam (or fake) blogs and SEO, and give an update on the relative influence of blogs compared to the mainstream media.

A team of researchers from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) has successfully demonstrated, for the first time, that it is possible to control the speed of light – both slowing it down and speeding it up – in an optical fiber, using off-the-shelf instrumentation in normal environmental conditions.
Their results, to be published in the August 22 issue of Applied Physics Letters, could have implications that range from optical computing to the fiber-optic telecommunications industry.
The sharp drop is due to a new DNA sequencing technology developed by Harvard Medical School (HMS) researchers Jay Shendure, Gregory Porreca, George Church, and their colleagues, reported on August 4 in the online edition of Science.

Just been watching the WWL tv coverage in NO, and the mayoe has just declared martial law in the city and is putting the entire police force on the streets with support from the national guard and possible the military.
Move the HQ to Alabama, rescind most taxcuts of the people that have benefited an amazing amount over the last few years and explain why he is doing so, and make everyone who lived in that area eligible for unemployment benefits for 52 weeks.

Active duty retention.  All services met or exceeded their overall retention goals for August and are projected to meet their retention goals for the current fiscal year.
Reserve forces recruiting.  Three of the six reserve components, Marine Corps Reserve, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, met or exceeded their August recruiting goals.  The Navy Reserve numbers are unavailable due to system failures as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
Reserve forces retention.  For August, Army National Guard retention was 103 percent of the cumulative goal of 29,472, and Air National Guard retention was 108 percent of its cumulative goal of 9,307.

The old office and lounge upstairs were turned back to student rooms, but the new space won't be ready until the day before (or possibly the day after) all the freshmen move in on August 25.
Last week, a decision was made to replace a large amount of the furniture in my dorm with pieces that would have been disposed of from another dorm that is getting all-new furniture.

Just a few weeks ago (before they closed for the month of August, quite cruelly), I noticed a basket next to the register in which they offered little bags of six assorted mini-loaves.
While the scent of red poppy syrup straight from the bottle is vaguely reminiscent of cough syrup (red poppy is an age-old soothing remedy, for sore throats in particular), it takes on a delightful acidulated sweetness when diluted, and its flavor could be likened to a subtle mix of strawberry, cherry and pomegrenate.

I plan to make this leg on Sunday, 28 August 2005 barring any unexpected need that requires my presence in Tallahassee sooner.
On Saturday, 17 September 2005 I will pick-up my U-Haul 6′ x 12′ Trailer, pack it and begin the trek back to Tallahassee, this time with the gracious assistance of my parents.
I have not yet seen the space and unfortunately will not be able to until possibly the end of August, but I am confident that it will be nice enough.
