  Houseplant - Information from Reference.com
A houseplant is usually a tropical or semi-tropical plant that is grown indoors in places such as residences and offices.
Houseplants are generally grown in specialized soils called potting compost or potting soil, not in local natural soil.
Most houseplants are tropical species selected for their adaptation to growth in a climate which ranges from 15°C to 25°C, similar to the temperature in most homes.

Once you become used to the weight of the houseplant you can tell if it needs to be watered just by holding it and judging the weight.

DIY Houseplant Nitrate Filter for Aquariums-- The Glass is Too Big   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Since aquariums that have good "traditional" biological filtration end up with nitrate filled water that has to be changed and that water is good for houseplants, you use the houseplants to pull the nitrates out of the water directly as part of the system.
In this case, houseplants are used instead of underwater plants due to the fact that they get their CO2 from the air in adequate quantities, so you don't need to supplement the water in any way to make the plants OK with it.
The primary idea is that these houseplants get their CO2 from the air instead of the water, making maintaining the setup much easier than totally submerged plants.
