August Vollmer was born in New Orleans, Lousiana, in 1876.
August Vollmer taught at summer sessions at the University between 1916 and 1932; after retirement he was appointed as research professor at Berkeley's political science department.
August Vollmer opposed the "Third Degree" method of interrogation, and was fond of saying (referring to the public), "Kill them with kindness." He was athletic, compassionate, honest, creative and intelligent, with a very commanding presence.
