August von Mackensen ( December 6, 1849 – November 8, 1945), was a German Field Marshal, born August Mackensen in Haus Leipnitz, in the Prussian province of Saxony, to Louis and Marie Louise Mackensen.
Until October of 1915 Mackensen saw action in Galicia, and assisted in the capture of Przemysl and Lemberg.
Mackensen died on November 8th 1945, after the Second World War, at the age of 95, his life having spanned the Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic, and Nazi Germany.

August von Mackensen was born on 6 December 1849.  He received education at the gymnasium and did subsequent university studies.  On 1 October 1869, Mackensen joined the 2.
Army and suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Russian General Rennenkampf during the Battle of Gumbinnen.  However, Mackensen's force was among those quickly transferred by rail to surround the advancing Army of Samsonov, and he played a conspicuous part in the resulting famous Battle of Tannenberg.  Then, Mackensen took command of the IX.
Mackensen was well-known for his love of commanding from the saddle, as this photo from 1916 suggests.

Mackensen strikes me as not a very German sounding name, and I found in looking around that there was actually a popular myth at one time that von Mackensen was actually a cashiered Scotish soldier who had joined the German Army after being tossed out of the British Army.
In 1914, von Mackensen came to attention for his part as commander of the German XVII Corps in the battles of Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes ('Tannenberg 1914' Sweetman J. He was then given command of the German 9th Army and launched a further offensive against the Russians.
On May 2nd, von Mackensen commanded the German 11th Army and the 4th Austro-Hungarian Army (von Mackensen Gruppe) that broke through the Russians in the Gorlice-Tarnow offensive ('General Headquarters 1914-1916' von Falkenhayn ISBN 0 89839 309 4) and led to the expulsion of the Russians from Poland.
