Originally, the title Augusta was only exceptionally bestowed on women of the Imperial dynasties: for these women it meant a fortification of their worldly power, and a status near to divinity.
As much as Augustus was the model for all further Augusti, Julia Augusta was the model for all further Augustae (plural of Augusta).
Agrippina minor, becoming "Augusta" under her last husband Claudius, would oblige to the model, being sent to death by her son Nero, a few years after he had become Emperor.

In 6 CE, Augustus' son-in-law Tiberius was to lead at least eight legions (VIII Augusta and XV Apollinaris from Pannonia, XX Valeria Victrix from Illyricum, XXI Rapax from Raetia, XIII Gemina, XIV Gemina and XVI Gallica from Germania Superior and an unknown unit) against king Marbod of the Marcomanni in Czechia.
In the confused year after the suicide of the emperor Nero, VIII Augusta sided with the pretender Otho and ensured his accession (January 69), but was unable to protect him against another pretender, Vitellius.

She was deified by Claudius who acknowledged her title of Augusta (honorific).
While reporting various unsavoury hearsay, the ancient sources generally portray Livia (Julia Augusta) as a woman of proud and queenly attributes, faithful to her imperial husband, for whom she was a worthy consort, forever poised and dignified.
Named Diva Augusta (The Divine Augusta), she received an elephant-drawn chariot to convey her image to all public games, a statue of her was set up in the temple of Augustus along with her husbands, races were held in her honour, and women were to name her in their oaths.

She was born on September 28, 58 BC as the daughter of Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus by his wife Alfidia.
But the title he hated the most which he forbade the Senate to bestow on her was that of Mater Patriae (Mother of the Fatherland) in the same manner in which Augustus had been named Pater Patriae (Father of the Fatherland) When Livia died in 29, Tiberius had already revealed his cruel nature.
It would be another 13 years in the year 42, under the reign of her grandson Claudius, that all her honours would be restored and her deification finally completed.

Legio XX The Twentieth Legion was one of four (II Augusta, IX Hispana, XIV Gemina, XX Valeria) that took part in the invasion of Britain in AD 43.
One opinion holds that the honorific has two parts, one derived from the family name of Valerius Messalinus, under whose command Legio XX gained distinction in suppressing the revolt of the Pannonians and Dalmatians in AD 6-9, and the other awarded for victory in the Boudican revolt of AD 60/61.
Legio XX had no cognomen apart from its double honorific, which was awarded only after the Boudican revolt, at the same time and for the same reason that Legio XIV Gemina was recognized with the title Martia Victrix.

Imperator - QuickSeek Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The term imperatrix seems not to have been used in Ancient Rome to indicate the consort of an imperator or later of an Emperor.
In the early years of the Roman Empire there was no standard title or honorific for the Emperor's wife, even the "Augusta" honorific was rather exceptionally granted, and not exclusively to wives of living emperors.
It is not clear when the feminine form of the Latin term imperator originated or was used for the first time.

We know that in the fourth and fifth centuries London was renamed Augusta, probably granted as an imperial honour, but it is not known exactly why or when.
History shows that the name did not stick and, indeed, the fourth-century historian Ammianus Marcellinus explains the honorific name by using the old name when he mentions the city.

Ulpia Severina, wife of Aurelian and Augusta since 274, possibly ruled alone after Aurelian's death and Tacitus election.
In 275, Aurelian marched towards Asia Minor, preparing another campaign against the Sassanids: the close deaths of Kings Shapur I (272) and Hormizd I (273), and the rise to power of a weakened ruler (Bahram I), set the possibility to attack the Sassanid Empire.
Ulpia Severina, wife of Aurelian and Augusta since 274, is said to have held the imperial role during the short interregnum before the election of Marcus Claudius Tacitus to the purple.
