Augusta County was named in honor of Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, wife of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, and mother of George III.
Augusta County Clerk of the Circuit Courthas Marriage Records from 1785, Land Records from 1745, Probate Records from 1745 and Court Records from 1745 and is located at the County Courthouse on 6 East Johnson Street, Staunton, VA 24401-4301, (540) 245-5321.
Virginia Tax lists from 1782 through 1785 were used as a substitute for the 1790 census, reportedly lost when the British burned the city of Washington during the War of 1812.

Augusta County was formed in 1738 from Orange County, although county government was not organized until 1745.
In 1778 the part of Augusta County west of the Ohio River became Illinois County (abolished in 1784); the northeastern part of what was left became Rockingham County, and the southwestern part was combined with part of Botetourt County to form Rockbridge County.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who are 65 years of age or older.

Judge Stuart died in 1832 and is buried at Trinity in Staunton.

At the time of Augusta County's creation from Orange County in November, 1738 and its commencing to function as a separate entity in 1745, the new county technically included all of Virginia's land claims from the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains north, west and south.
Botetourt County was cut from Augusta lands in 1769 and included all of Augusta County south of a line run through the middle of Rockbridge and Bath counties.

By 1738, the colonists in Virginia honored Frederick and his wife Augusta (the Princess of Wales) by naming two new counties after them, Frederick and Augusta.
Both counties were so far on the edge of development that it took until 1743 for Frederick to have enough tithables to operate, and it took Augusta until 1745 to become operational.
For seven years, residents of Augusta had to keep on travelling to the county seat of Orange to probate wills, record deeds for land, and try civil or criminal suits.
