It was a self-indicated site, at the intersection of two rivers, on the great northern trade thoroughfare from east to west, between the two seas, and the national center of the west section of the Po valley, just where the great river begins to be navigable.
Turin was called from the emperor Augusta Taurinorum and became the center of a territory extending about one hundred and fifty kilo-meters from north to south and over a hundred kilometers from west to east, in a great arc whose southern base rested on the river Po and was bounded by the great Alpine curve.
The form of its official title gives the clue : "Colonia Julia Augusta Taurinorum." There is some dispute as to the use of the term "Julia," whether all colonies were so-called because established under the Lex Julia or by or in memory of Julius Caesar.

Entrata nella storia intorno al 27 a.C, con il nome di colonia Augusta Taurinorum, che, secondo le leggende che circondano sempre la nascita delle città, sorse sull'insediamento di Taurasia, mitica capitale dei Tauri, incendiata da Annibale nella lunga marcia di avvicinamento a Roma.
Entro le mura vi era il teatro mentre l'anfiteatro, oggi andato perduto, era all'esterno: esso era a pianta ellittica con una gradinata digradante verso un'area centrale in cui si svolgevano spettacoli di gladiatori, lotte di animali e a volte anche battaglie navali, disputate nella profonda fossa centrale, appositamente riempita d'acqua.
L'unico edificio pubblico di Augusta Taurinorum di cui si abbia pieno riscontro archeologico è il teatro, mentre per gli altri sinora ci si è dovuti limitare alla formulazione di ipotesi.

a colony of Roman citizens was founded at Eporedia itself; but the prosperity of this was only assured when the Salassi were finally defeated in 25 B.C. and Augusta Praetoria founded.
