 Who was Auguste Vestris ?
VESTRIS is a name that has become as much identified with the art of the dance as that of Garrick with drama and Mozart with music.
From that moment, Vestris took the little Auguste home with him, gave him a careful upbringing, and within two years brought him so far, that in the year 1771, though only eleven years old, he made his début with the greatest bravura.
Vestris had to put up with being called “Grandfather of Zephyrs”, and finally it was only his mimic talent, and the direct protection of the Emperor, that upheld his old renown.

I The society will bear the name of Auguste Vestris (1760-1842), because, as the professor of Carlo Blassis, Jules Perrot and Auguste Bournonville, we may conclude that he was a/ a Man of Principle, b/ a Genius, and c/ who knows, possibly a helluva lot of fun to be around as well.
VII The Vestris Society is concerned to hear of talented professors, holed out in the bush, by that I mean places like the Dakotas, Inverness, or the Kamchatka Peninsula, unsung, ignored by a wider public.

This depiction of Auguste Vestris, one of the most famous male dancers of the late eighteenth century, is hardly the vision of restrained practicality and tentative manners.
In his time (the date of this image is 1781), Vestris was seen to embody all the noble aspects of the courtly ballet and the masculinity admired and extolled by an affluent, aristocratic society.
However, it is significant that Nathaniel Dance, who drew the image upon which this etching is based, was paid fifty guineas to depict Vestris in a light pink tunic and hat, to which Vestris responded by accusing the painter of libel.

Maximilien Gardel (1741-1787) would later discard the masks used in the Ballet in 1772.
