 Columba
The small constellation Columba was introduced to the southern sky maps by Frenchman Augustin Royer in 1679.
Originally, it was denoted Columba Noachi (Noah's Dove - representing the dove released by Noah from the Ark after coming to rest on Mt. Ararat) but the shortened "Columba" was accepted by the International Astronomical Union in 1930.
Columba, like its neighbor Caelum, is home to no naked eye objects but has several multiple stars, several galaxies and one of the finer globular clusters (NGC 1851), all of which are of telescopic interest.

Constellation of the Month: Lacerta: The Lizard.
This area of sky seems to attract attention, before the Lizard of Hevelius was placed here, Augustin Royer invented a different constellation called, “The Scepter and Hand of Justice,” in honor of King Louis XIV of France.
Then about a century after Royer, the German astronomer Johann Ellert Bode, altered Royer’s asterism a bit and called it, “Gloria Frederica” in honor of his king Frederick the Great of Prussia.
Bode’s and Royer’s creations did not stand the test of time and Hevelius’ Lacerta became accepted after its inclusion in John Flamsteed’s, Catalog of Stars published posthumously in 1726.

They were the first charts to identify astral magnitude (brightness) with a lettering system, using Greek characters for the brighter stars and Roman letters for the fainter.
Although the Italian cartographer Alessandro Piccolomini had earlier used a somewhat similar system, it was not until Augustin Royer used the Bayer letters in 1679, followed shortly by John Flamsteed, that the system gained currency among celestial chartmakers.
Bayer's atlas also added twelve new constellations, in the southern sky, to the forty-eight of Ptolemy.

 Nature - Thinking Woman's Diary
The Southern Cross was once part of the constellation Centaurus, but astronomers and navigators of the 16th century considered the beautiful, latin cross a fine symbol of their faith and therefore worthy of a separate constellation.
The general belief is that it was mathematically dissected from Centaurus and named Crux Australis by French astronomer Augustin Royer in the 17th century.
But the Crux was also distinctly mentioned in letters written by Andrea Corsali in 1515, when he made a beautiful, woodcut engraving of it.
