Agar's mother, who was an Austrian, died shortly after his birth and at the age of eight he was sent with one of his brothers to school in England.
Agar then served as Captain of The Royal Naval College at Greenwich, England, but with war in the offing he was returned to command of the Emerald in the summer of 1939.
Agar's tour of duty as captain of the Emerald was up in late May 1940 and he spent the next 6 months on temporary duty, first as commander of the 16th destroyer flotilla at Harwich.

He was sent from Rome to convert England to Christianity by Pope Gregory I. He landed at Ebbsfleet in Kent in 597 and soon after baptized Ethelbert, King of Kent, along with many of his subjects.
He was consecrated bishop of the English at Arles in the same year, and appointed archbishop in 601, establishing his see at Canterbury.
Augustine was originally prior of the Benedictine monastery of St Andrew, Rome.

He was the thirteenth child of John Shelton Agar, an Irishman from County Kerry who had left his native land in 1860 to become a successful tea planter in Ceylon.
