  Augustus Octavius Bacon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Augustus Octavius Bacon (October 20, 1839–February 14, 1914) was a U.S. political figure, a Democratic Party senator from Georgia.
He was a soldier in the army of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, and then, after Georgia returned to the United States, he served in the Georgia State House of Representatives from 1871 to 1888, for much of that time as House speaker.
Senator Bacon died in Washington, D.C. at the age of 75.

By the death of his parents the boy was left an orphan at an early age, but under the care of a grandmother he spent his boyhood, and at the age of 16 he entered the University of Georgia, graduating in the collegiate course in 1859, and the law school in 1860.
Maj. Bacon's record, under the circumstances, could hardly be other than a brilliant one.

Georgia's 151st county was named for U.S. Senator Augustus Octavius Bacon, who had died in February 1914.
In 1945, Georgia voters ratified a new constitution -- one which provided an absolute limit of 159 counties, with an additional provision (see text) that no new country could be created except through consolidation of existing counties.
As an interesting note, Bacon is one of 25 Georgia counties that still have their original boundaries provided at the time of creation.

In 1909, at the age of 25, Vinson was elected to the Georgia General Assembly and served as Speaker Pro Tempore by 1911.
After losing a third term following redistricting, he was briefly appointed judge of the Baldwin County court, but following the sudden death of Senator Augustus Bacon, Representative Thomas Hardwick was nominated to fill Bacon's Senate seat and Vinson announced his candidacy for Hardwick's U.S. House seat, which he won over three other opponents.
He was sworn in as the youngest member of Congress on November 3, 1914.
