Augustus Saint-Gaudens (Dublin, March 1, 1848- Cornish, New Hampshire, August 3, 1907), was the Irish-born American sculptor of the Beaux Arts generation who most embodied the ideals of the "American Renaissance."
Through his career Augustus Saint-Gaudens' made a specialty of intimate private portrait panels in sensitive, very low relief, which owed something to the Florentine Renaissance.
The colony of artists made for a dynamic social and creative environment, at the center of which stood Augustus Saint-Gaudens; after his death in 1907 it slowly disspiated.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) was famous for making two kinds of art that relatively few artists pursue: (1) monumental public sculpture, and (2) small-scale portrait reliefs (raised images carved from a flat background of stone or marble, or shaped in plaster and often cast in bronze).
Augustus Saint-Gaudens' tribute to the Massachusetts Fifty-fourth is a colossal relief sculpture measuring 11 x 14 feet (33 x 42 m).
Today this bronze is on display at Saint-Gaudens' Cornish property, and the restored plaster is at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Back to NGA Classroom

America's greatest sculptor of the 19th century, Augustus Saint Gaudens (1848-1907) was born on Charlemont Street in Dublin at the height of the Irish Famine in 1848.
It took Saint Gaudens fourteen years to complete the memorial, which was unveiled in 1897 at a ceremony attended by Booker T. Washington, philosopher William James, and the families of the soldiers.
Saint Gaudens' other major sculpture of interest is the Charles Stuart Parnell statue on O'Connell Street in Dublin, which was his last major work before he died in 1907.

The fact that an unauthorized copy of St. Gaudens' figure was made in 1906-1907 for a grave site in Baltimore's Druid Ridge Cemetery confirms that the composition was still understood in early twentieth century America as a piece of funerary art belonging in a cemetery.
Gaudens returned in this monument to a concept he would have known well from his years in France, the brooding tomb figure seen on many monuments in the Parisian cemetery called Pere Lachaise.
