It is situated on the northern end of Langalanga Lagoon on the north-west coast of Malaita Island.

Soaki was dining at Auki Lodge in the Malaita provincial capital when a masked man walked into the restaurant and shot him dead at close range.
Sir Frederick was in Auki as a member of a delegation to help with workshops arranged as part of the Demobilization Program for Special Constables.

Solomon Islands Police in the Malaitan capital Auki have confirmed that the prime suspect in the murder of leading peace campaigner Sir Frederick Soaki has killed again.
The gunman, a former police sergeant at the Auki Police Station, escaped from Rove prison in Honiara last Tuesday.
And he might not have intended to shoot at the suspects but the action that he took was indiscriminate.

Alas, in many ways, RAMSI itself has succumbed to this same form of centralisation – hence the poor quality of policing and lack of infrastructure development in the provinces.
(I hope they travelled over on the Sa’alia – a trip on that boat brings home the need for support in the provinces – it is a floating hell hole and the only affordable way for locals traveling between Auki and Honiara since the airstrip has been closed in a land dispute last year).

In 1990 I visited Solomon Islands for the first time, staying in Honiara on Guadalcanal, with a quick trip to Savo Island and a ferry ride to Auki on Malaita thrown in for good measure.
The stay was brief, but the friendly people, with their rich cultural diversity, won me over.
In 1994, the latter part of an extended RTW took me back to Solomon Islands for four months.
