  Reconstruction of Auldhame Castle
The background history to Auldhame is non-existent, unlike the ruin which is substantial, being a long L-plan building with corner turrets and square towers.
It is possible Auldhame was occupied and damaged by Cromwell's army during their 12 day bombardment of Tantallon.
Auldhame is not mentioned in written reports to Cromwell as it was probably regarded as an unimportant house.

Bass Rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the 5th January 1542 we find John Lauder, Scotland's Public Accuser of Heretics, and a son of Sir Robert Lauder of The Bass, Knt., as "the Cardinal's Secretary" representing Cardinal David Beaton at a reconsecration of the restored and ancient St.Baldred's chapel on The Bass.
In 1576 it is recorded that the Church on the Bass, and that at Auldhame (on the mainland), required no readers, doubtless something to do with the Reformation.
It is also home to a 20 metre lighthouse, built in 1902 by David Stevenson, who demolished the 13th century keep, or governor's house, and some other buildings within the castle for the stone.

 North Berwick Town History
Auldhame was so important in the life of the early church that it was recognised as a separate parish.
Although the small kirk's at Auldhame and Scoughall are long gone, many of the place-names still refer to the Culdee priest such as St. Baldred's Well and St. Baldred's Boat, a rock formation in the bay.
In mediaeval times Auldhame belonged to the Bishop of St Andrews, later the 16th century House of Auldhame was the home of Sir Adam Otterburn who was King's Advocate in the reign of James V and became Provost of Edinburgh.

 Live Shellfish Scotland
Auldhame was originally published as St Baldred's House as it was traditionally said to have been the residence of that saint, though other local informants thought that it may have been the remains of a church (see NT68SW 17).
The background history to Auldhame is non-existent, unlike the ruin which is substantial, being a long L-shaped building with corner turrets and square towers.
This was after Cromwell's defeat of the Scots army at Dunbar in 1650 and during his systematic destruction of Lothian castles held by Scots loyal to King Charles 11(1660-1685).

Some of the earlier burials found may throw light on the associations between Auldhame and St Baldred, and there is also the possibility that the team could find structures dating from the time of St Baldred.

The date of the earliest settlement at Auldhame is unknown, but the discovery near a prehistoric round cairn at St Baldred’s cradle and Iron Age burials at Ghegan’s Cave suggest the immediate area was occupied from at least the Bronze Age.

The archaeological team now hope the discovery will be linked to St Baldred, who founded a monastery at nearby Tyninghame and lived a life of solitude on the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth before his death in AD 756.
John Gooder, senior project officer with AOC Archaeology, which is carrying out the Auldhame excavation work on behalf of Historic Scotland, said: "The excavation provides an exciting addition to East Lothian’s rich heritage.
