Aultsville remained active in the political spotlight during the twenties and thirties when a number of local area residents rose to prominent positions.
Although Aultsville had once been described as the most important of all the riverside villages, its growth and real-estate values, like that of its neighbours, had been stifled by the shadow of the seaway.
By the 1950's, all that remained of Aultsville's early industries were the cheese factory, a nearby poultry farm, a sash and door factory, an automobile dealership and the eight-room Anchor Bay Lodge.

 The Lost Villages - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lost Villages are ten communities in the Canadian province of Ontario, in the township of South Stormont near Cornwall, which were permanently submerged by the creation of the St.
In the weeks and months leading up to the inundation, families and businesses in the affected communities were moved to the new planned communities of Long Sault and Ingleside.
In the Stormont County map, seven of the Lost Villages can be noted along the train tracks near the St. Lawrence River.

Ontario Hydro had revealed its "rehabilitation" program and dispatched what locals called a "hydro circus" to hold public meetings in the communities.
However, Robert Saunders, who as Chairman of Ontario Hydro since 1948 had led the parade of progress, was not there to see the opening of the massive hydro dam named for him.

Aultsville, Ontario was founded under the name Charlesville in 1787.
Primarily a manufacturing town (brick, pottery, window sashes and cheese), in 1856 it became a regular stop on the Grand Trunk Railway.
Unfortunately when the gates were opened and the water levels rose, the end was spelled for a number of riverside communities including Aultsville.

There was a dance floor, with roof, and a nickelodeon in the southeast corner provided the hits of the day, with the drop of a coin.
When the village of Farran’s Point was flooded, the pavilion was moved to the Stormont Agricultural Society’s Fairground at Newington, Ontario.
While the original community established on Jacob Farrand’s land no longer exists the lieutenant’s name lives on in Farran Park, a riverfront campground at Ingleside, Ontario, operated by the Township of South Stormont on land owned by the Parks of the St. Lawrence.

It will be 50 years ago in February that a man from an Ontario power company knocked on Hickey's door and told him to get ready to move.
His hometown of Aultsville would be leveled and flooded when dam builders finished the job of choking the natural flow of the river, and all its residents would be relocated to a new town being scratched out of high ground.

The first importation of the Holstein-Friesian breed to North America was from Holland in 1881 to the U.S. There is some doubt as to whether the first Holstein was imported into Canada via Manitoba or Ontario.
In 1882, the Holstein Herdbook records the transfers of one bull and nine cows to Michael Cook and Son, Aultsville, Ontario.
However, a sale bill of M. Cook and Son in 1892, states that the 'Pioneer Holstein-Friesian Herd of Canada' was established in 1881.

George Miller and Dick Chichester stopped in Ingleside to see a little-known monument dedicated to the arrival of the first Holstein in Ontario before heading to Mount Victoria, Quebec, where they strolled through an empty barn that once held one of the most famous herds in the world.
The Ingleside monument, located near the former village of Aultsville, is marked on either side by plaques from the Ontario Heritage Foundation and the Stormont County Holstein Club.
It commemorates the centennial of Michael Cooks 1881 importation of two bulls and 10 cows to his farm at the lost village of Aultsville, which later disappeared under the waters of the Seaway project in the 1950s.

We would be glad to hear from anyone who knows anything about these people and/or their descendants.
The only "Aultsville" we know of was in Ontario.
We and many of his descendants live near Aultsville and the property where Johannes lived and died, (Iroquois, Ontario - Dundas County).
