Aulus Cremutius Cordus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are very few remaining fragments of his work, that covered the civil war and the reign of Augustus Caesar.
We also know from this source - a letter to Cordus' daughter Marcia - that he starved himself to death.
She was also instrumental in saving his work, so that it could be published again under Caligula.

His real offence was a witticism at the expense of Sejanus, who put up two of his creatures to accuse him in the senate.
Seeing that nothing could save him, Cordus starved himself to death.
A decree of the senate ordered that his works should be confiscated and burned by the aediles.

 Seneca Essays Book 2
Was it not to burst with rage to think of a Sejanus planted upon the ashes of Gnaeus Pompeius, a disloyal soldier hallowed by a statue in a memorial to one of the greatest generals?
At the instigation of Sejanus, accusers of Cordus appeared before the tribunal of the consuls, complained that their victim was dying, and begged them to prevent the very thing they had forced upon him; so strongly did they feel that Cordus was escaping them!
The great question in dispute was whether an accused man lost his right to die; while the matter was being debated, while his accusers were making their plea a second time, he had already gained his freedom.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this post was a passage of Tacitus _Annals_ 4,34, which depicts the speech of Aulus Cremutius Cordus, who was charged with the new charge of praising Brutus and describing Cassius as the "last of the Romans" in his History.
However, what I find particularly striking is Tacitus summery in which he notes that Cremutius' books survived the attempt to burn them after this trial.
He concludes "This makes one deride the stupidity of people who believe that today's authority can destroy tomorrow's memories.
