Jerry Herman, the composer and lyricist of these songs, may be a little underappreciated because he wrote in the twilight of that era, but he has the lilt, wit, and flair that make the ears tingle with the special magic of the musical theatre.
The show also leans heavily on the exuberance of its party scenes, whether among Mame's Manhattan friends or on the Georgia plantation of the husband she catches mid-show, Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside.
What director Dennis Shelton and choreographer Cindy Duggan give their cast to do is fine as far as it goes, but perhaps a few more suggestions and a couple more dance steps might have helped some folks in the chorus look like they're really having a good time instead of forcing it.
