Aunt May lives in constant worry for her "frail" (but now unaccountably secretive) nephew who insists on a job as a freelance photographer.
For decades, Aunt May was depicted as a stereotypical near senile old crone, especially after co-creator Steve Ditko left the book and the subtle undertone of her inner strength was lost.

May always got sick (I should go back and count how many heart attacks or near heart attacks she had), Peter always got frantic, always had to be in two places at once, and this plot device got old real quick.
Oddly enough, the one thing that could have given May a new lease on life was her revelation just before her "death" in Amazing Spider-Man #400 that she knew that her beloved nephew was Spider-Man. She had known for years, but was in denial because of the fear of losing him.
It may perfect sense, actually, and as May herself said "I'd have been an idiot not to know." In this moment, May was redeemed as a character because it was apparent that she was not as stupid or senile as she had long been presented.

May Reilly Parker, often known as Aunt May, is a supporting character in Marvel Comics' Spider-Man series.
In the alternate timeline known as MC2, May Parker is dead, although the exact nature of her death is never discussed (A letter in Spider-Girl #48, however, mentions that her "death" in The Amazing Spider-Man #400 is valid in MC2 Continuity).
May is understandably stunned and sad, but later thanks Peter and tells him that admitting the truth to her was a brave thing to do.

Even if this was the REAL Aunt May as we know her today, Linda was not the fruit of her loins, but merely a mermaid that they took in.
The reason that May thought the child died is because it was a breach baby and she thought it wasn't born with a head so she tossed it away.

Aunt May does not know from the beginning that Peter is Spider-man. I can see why people saying she did because she said before she died.

I mean when I read issues where Aunt May isn't there for instance if it's of the Green goblin, and then when I think of the green goblin issues since the relaunch, I have this huge problem with knowing Aunt May is alive in that issue and I keep saying to myself it's another universe.
Simple--what happened happened, and we must move on, especially considering that Aunt May is finally being used, and well.
And I can accept, reluctantly, that the dead woman there is not Aunt May, but an actress--and the issue is still powerful.

My opinion of this book may have been a bit higher if I hadn’t read the DD What If beforehand, which makes this one feel like a rehash.
The survival of Karen Page ends up worse for Matt Murdock than her death and here the death of Aunt May leads to worse consequences for Peter and Ben than Ben’s death.
Since the death of Uncle Ben definitely was the defining moment in shaping Peter Parker’s approach to being Spider-Man Ed Brubaker is absolutely on the right track by having his personality altered by the switch of victims.
