The Aupouri Peninsula is a tombolo at the northern tip of the North Island of New Zealand.
Close to the northern town of Kaitaia, the North Auckland Peninsula suddenly narrows from a width of 60 kilometres to a mere 10 kilometres, a width which it maintains approximately for the last 100 kilometres of its thrust to the north.
The east coast of the Aupouri Peninsula is dominated by Rangaunu Bay in the south and Great Exhibition Bay in the north.

The peninsula is easily confused with, though not the same as Northland Region, which occupies the top 80% of the peninsula.
At its northern end, the Aupouri Peninsula reaches a number of capes each of which is claimed by some people to be the North Island's northernmost point: Cape Maria van Diemen, Cape Reinga, North Cape, and the Surville Cliffs.
The largest settlement on the peninsula (ignoring parts of Auckland) is Whangarei, on a natural harbour opening on the Pacific Ocean close to the peninsula's widest point.

The Aupouri Peninsula extends from Kaitaia north to the three capes, with the 90 Mile beach along virtually the entire western length, and a series of beaches and bays indent the eastern side.
The name Aupouri is taken from the local Maori tribe, and they in turn assumed it from the name of one of the several canoes that took part in a migration from islands in the central Pacific, probably about 900 AD.
Awanui township is at the southern extremity of the harbour of the same name, about 8 km north of Kaitaia and at the point where the main east coast road and the main highway north meet.

Aupouri severely defeated Ngati Kuri, and the survivors withdrew to the valley of Whangape River, at Rotokakahi below Pangaru hills.
In their turn the Aupouri remnants withdrew northwards into what is now known as Te Aupouri Peninsula.
As Te Aupouri also married into Ngati Kuri, their name became widespread in Muriwhenua by the time they were settled in their present areas, about 1720.

We could see the swirl and waves from where they met but didnt see the 10 metre high waves that are sometimes seen in stormy weather.
After visiting this we were driven to 90 mile beach which is on the Aupouri Peninsula just south of Cape Reinga, this is masked by very high sand dunes where part of the tour was to go boogie boarding down these high sand dunes.
It did look quite fun but we just watched the others come flying down the sand dunes on these boards.
