Aura Battler Dunbine Anime Impressions - Tokidoki Entertainment Journal - Anime and Video Game Community
Within the first few minutes of Aura Battler Dunbine the viewer is transported from Earth to the world of Byston Well, and is quickly greeted with a group of human characters who are torturing a beautiful woman in a cage.
The moods and events in Aura Battler Dunbine are exceptionally adult, a good example being the aforementioned racial comments yelled from one character to another.
For many people, Aura Battler Dunbine has two knocks against it from the get-go: it is a long series (most likely twelve volumes by the time it finishes next year), and it is decidedly oldschool.

Dunbine was one of the first anime series to combine fantasy with modern science fiction (though this would be repeated with The Vision of Escaflowne).
The Aura Battler mecha were all undisputedly the most dodge crazy units in the game with decent attack.
The Dunbine units, although quite small in comparison with some units, the units from the L-Gaim series for example, they are not to be taken lightly, their Aura attacks can take out several opponents at once, are very damaging and can be used more often then the high powered attacks of other units.

DVD Verdict Review - Aura Battler Dunbine: Volumes 5 To 10
Dunbine strikes me as a cross between Saint Seiya and Gundam, a nod to the days when vast, dense epics (usually centered around warfare, as Dunbine is) were the big anime draws.
What works about Aura Battler Dunbine is that the machines never take over the story—it's the egos and the aspirations of the people involved that ultimately drive the plot.
Also in keeping with old-school animation style, when the aura battlers and battleships go to war, the dogfights are intense and epic in scope—there is nothing middling about the way these ships go at it, and each fight becomes like a carefully choreographed dance, a thing of beauty to behold.

Even though "Dunbine" is an entirely separate work, it covers a lot of the same thematic ground as the "Gundam" saga, especially in its exploration of the brutality of war, its high character body count, and its annoyingly whiny protagonist.
However, these machines are called "aura battlers" for a reason: they can only be activated by people with strong auras.
And the only people with auras strong enough to effectively pilot the aura battlers are those from "Upper Earth": our world.

Set on Earth and the trans-dimensional world of Byston Well, Aura Battler Dunbine follows the exploits of a group of young men plucked from their earthly existence and trained (often against their will) into becoming pilot/conscripts for despotic DRAKE LUFT'S army of unique "mind-powered" robot weapons-the Aura Battlers.

The most surprising thing about Aura Battler Dunbine is not its much touted mecha design (sort of insectoid) or its action (the animation, from 1983, is rather dated)—it is the intelligent writing.
