Aura Noir - Biography - AOL Music
Oslo, Norway's Aura Noir is a side project for some of the local extreme metal scene's most noted luminaries, to wit: vocalist/bassist Ole Jørgen Moe, guitarist Carl-Michael Eide (both of them also with Cadaver and Dødheimsgard), guitarist Rune Erickson (Mayhem, Mezzerschmitt), and, as of late, drummer Dirge Rep (Enslaved, Gehenna, etc.).
Getting their start as early as 1993, the occasional supergroup issued a number of demos before debuting in 1995 with the Dreams Like Deserts EP, which revealed them to be essentially thrash enthusiasts immersed in the stylistic trappings of the surrounding fl metal community.
Aura Noir's follow-up efforts have included 1997's Black Thrash Attack, 1999's Deep Tracts of Hell, and 2000's Increased Damnation -- the last of which also featured guest contributions from Darkthrone legend Fenriz.

Aura Noir biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Aura Noir was formed with the intent on creating music even stranger than it's founding member, Aggressor's main band Ved Buens Ende (an avantgarde band with melancholic Black metal tones.) Apollyon was asked to join the band in order to help him with guitar duties.
Aura Noir was one of the first bands to combine 90's Black metal with a thrash edge, thus coining the term "retro-thrash".
Between all the side-projects and tours, the unholy trinity of Aura Noir have performed a few live shows, and will definitely record a new album in the future...when this evil shall be unleashed is uncertain.

Aura Noir - The Merciless - review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Aura Noir is supposed to be one of the few old school bands that perform convincing fl/thrash metal.
In the past, a couple of albums were released by these people, and there, apart from listening to their brand of metal firmly linked to the glorious past, we could stumble on riffs directly taken from bands as Sodom or Nuclear Assault.
Then, the rest of “The Merciless” is Aura Noir in their tradition: thrashy metal with the everflowing fl metal hints here and there, in the vein of Dark Angel.

After a long absence Aura Noir are back for their third full-length with a line-up that again includes Mayhem's Blasphemer.
The Merciless is the first release on Fenriz's new label and probably an obvious choice considering Fenriz had Aura Noir featured on his recent The Best Of Old-School Black Metal compilation.

Seriously, it's safe to say that Aura Noir rejects everything -- god, country, family, self, faith, hope, love -- that greater society agrees is essential to happiness, and yet they create an album like Increased Damnation, which is a total mega-thrash romp that encapsulates and compresses everything good about music.

CoC : Aura Noir : Interview
With their debut album, _Black Thrash Attack_ [CoC #21], Aura Noir seemed to be heading down the "retro-thrash" path, though in much more style and with more skill than the majority of the "retro-thrash" scene.
Aura Noir have added a vicious fl metal edge to their sound.
They haven't lost the thrashy brilliance of their debut, but they also haven't let their previous musical formula stagnate, so that now, instead of "BTA vol.2", we have the aggressive, thrashy, flened mass of metal that is _Deep Tracts of Hell_.

BNR Metal Pages -- Aura Noir   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Formed as a side project by a pair of Norwegians with past fl metal alliances, Aura Noir bill themselves as "unholy fl thrash", which is quite a reasonable description, as their style an intense form of retro thrash (think early Kreator or Destruction) with vocals that are a bit more contemporary and fl-metallish.
Mainmen Apollyon and Aggressor have an interesting songwriting/ instrument arrangement, with all odd-numbered tracks written by Aggressor, who plays guitar, bass, and sings (Apollyon drums), and completely switching all songwriting and instrument-playing responsibilities on the even-numbered tracks.
The band has been quiet for some time as various band members participate in other projects, but in 2004 a new album, The Merciless, was recorded, and was released later in the year.

Aura Noir : Deep Tracts of Hell
But as with their last release “Black Thrash Attack,” this new one assumes that same formula of mixing in traditional thrash, only without so much of the common orchestrated arrangements and devilish chants associated with those strictly of the fl metal persuasion.
“Deep Tracts of Hell” is Aura Noir’s third album and they could just as well have called this one “Black Thrash Attack” too if they felt like it.
But moving on, it marks a new chapter for the band who’s now under contract with their new label Hammerheart records for nearly a year.

For the uninitiated, Aura Noir is basically a fl/thrash project featuring members from Dodheimsgard, Ved Buens End, and now Darkthrone, with each respective member going under the pseudonyms,"Apollyon" (bass/drums), "Aggressor" (drums/bass), and "Blasphemer" (guitars).
