  Illusions Revisited
Illusions are made from mana, so an illusionist is heavily dependent on the supply of mana in the area.
Illusions can create the presence of something that isn't there, or they can disguise the appearance of something that is there, but they can't make something seem not to be there.
A visual illusion would become transparent, an aural illusion would sound like a thin echo, an olfactory illusion would become the merest hint, and a tactile illusion would be like the touch of a feather.

 Princecon XXI: Mage Spells
Illusions are really there: illusory walls do block sight, loud noises will obscure other sounds.
In addition, most illusions are dispelled by touch of flesh; all illusions can be dispelled by Dispel Magic.
Note that unless the illusion is interactive, the entire script of the illusion must be chosen at the time of casting.

Illusion of Safety   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Illusion of Safety's agenda bears more than a passing resemblance to the work of post-structuralist thinker Jean Baudrillard.
Each album is an aural investigation of the fear responses elicited from two distinct and often diametrically opposed phenomena: the hyper-saturation of the media and the sublime power of nature.
Meanwhile, Illusion of Safety's investigations of natural sounds find the group in awe of their experiences.

The aural rendering of a document, already commonly used by the blind and print-impaired communities, combines speech synthesis and "auditory icons." Often such aural presentation occurs by converting the document to plain text and feeding this to a
Style sheet properties for aural presentation may be used together with visual properties (mixed media) or as an aural alternative to visual presentation.
When using aural properties, the canvas consists of a three-dimensional physical space (sound surrounds) and a temporal space (one may specify sounds before, during, and after other sounds).

A Perceptual Approach to Acousmatic Music
The aural score itself is prefaced by a diagram of a frequency analysis used in the score's construction.
Wehinger's "aural score" (Wehinger/Ligeti, 1970) again retains the trace of the staff, and despite its perceptual veracity simultaneously emphasises the trace of the composer's actions in its classification of sound material in a fashion that recalls the use of the score as a document which represents the 'message' of the composer.
Despite the aural basis of his project, it is based upon the same denial of mimesis as part of musical discourse that can be found in the writings of Hanslick.

Auditory illusion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An auditory illusion is an illusion of hearing, the sound equivalent of an optical illusion: the listener hears either sounds which are not present in the stimulus, or "impossible" sounds.
In short, audio illusions highlight areas where the human ear and brain, as organic, makeshift tools, differ from perfect audio receptors (for better or for worse).

Aural Synthetica is a software sound creation program based around the modular synthesizers popular in the 1960's.
Aural Synthetica can do one thing that was impossible on modular systems - you can save your setup and reload it at any time.
Aural Synthetica is a very complex program but to make life easier there are preset "Basic Synthesizer" setups built into the program, these are comprised of a number of pre-connected modules and you are free to change the settings as much as you wish.

...The pattern that produces the scale illusion consists of a scale with successive tones alternating from ear to ear.
The scale is played simultaneusly in both ascending and descending form; however, when a tone from the ascending scale is in the right ear a tone from the descending sale is in the left ear, and vice versa.
So it seems to the listener as though the process of reversing the earphone positions has caused the higher tones to migrate from one earphone to the other, and the lower tones to migrate in the opposite direction.

Head Related Transfer Functions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
For example, this is a two second interval of noise that has been filtered to sound as though it originates from 40 degrees of elevation and 51 degrees of azimuth from the listener (headphones are needed for optimum effect).
To create the aural illusion of a sound originating from a particular location, a mono version of the sound must be convolved with a right and left impulse response corresponding to the desired azimuth and elevation angles.
When different head transfer functions are applied at different times, another aural illusion can be created: movement of the source.

In one test, Saint-Gille's talents were employed to convince a credulous woman that she heard the voice of a spirit, and then the researchers laboriously persuaded her of the real source of her illusion (the gendered aspects of this exhibition-the men of reason, the woman of superstitious faith-were all too transparent).
Whereas some wanted to emphasize the formal acoustic dimensions of vocal illusions, for Stewart the point was the way in which the ventriloquist "manages the imaginations of his audience" through misdirection, counterfeiting, and theater.
Religious and artistic ventriloquism both represent a very ancient illusion, and are the first source of the belief in prophecy and divination, and it is from this source that all the superstitions and religions have grown out.

 Extended Techniques for Flute
Another device composers use to create polyphony is based on an aural illusion.
It involves sustaining a pitch, jumping to another register to pop out a single pitch, and rapidly returning to the original note at the same dynamic level.
In James Romig's Sonnet 2, the following note appears in the score: "To create the illusion of sustained sound in the lower voice, the staccato note in the upper voice is to be played as quickly as possible before returning to the lower note."

This article investigates how aural 'images' of aboriginality are technologised and transposed across cultures, with special regard to the didjeridu.
By examining and explicating one specific aural image of "aboriginality" in the soundscapes of Australia's humanscapes this article has aimed to illuminate the manner in which the cultural production and processes of technologisation and transposition of didjeridu are complex and diverse.
On a national level, the nature of the social negotiation of icons of aboriginality, aural and otherwise, is not simplistic; but neither is the didjeridu as instrument or icon.

The percussive and electro-percussive rhythms are unashamedly rooted in the chilled-out glory days of mid-nineties ambience, while the deep, dubby and throbbing bass lines are kept strong but unobtrusive, so that they add to the overall soundscape while still propelling the sound to even greater heights.
I learned this reading an article on Aural Fixation's site that was from an interview of Michael when he was discussing this CD in November of 2004.
To be able to use the computer as an instrument--that he says he doesn't even know how to 'properly take advantage of the tools available within the music program they use' and to have the quality of music come out of using that instrument is truly great musicianship.

Thus, when an individual views a film, both visual (as explained above) and aural (the illusion that the images are the actual source of the soundtrack) hallucinations occur.

The simplest property (found in the listener property set) lets you select an environmental preset—that is, to specify the type of room in which you want the listener and sound sources located.
Once you specify the room using this single property, the EAX engine does all the rest of the work necessary to create the aural illusion of being in that room.
In order to avoid unnaturally long decay times at high frequencies, EAX 2.0 offers the option of limiting the high-frequency decay time to a value controlled by the setting of the Air Absorption HF parameter (in large rooms, it is the air absorption that determines the high-frequency decay time).

The stereo image is enhanced with the unit, resulting in a greater perceived loudness without an introduction of noise into the audio path due to increased gain.

Maryanne Amacher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maryanne Amacher (born February 25, 1943) is an American composer of sound installations.
Her pieces are almost exclusively site specific, the psychoacoustic illusions she creates being determined by the acoustics of the architecture.
Amacher released an album, Sound Characters (Making the Third Ear), on Tzadik, the title of which refers to the illusion created that the sounds are coming from within one's own head.

E-mail 'Happy Faces' Come Alive - Technology News by TechWeb
Movellan cited an aural illusion, called the Mcgurk effect, whereby a speaker says "ga" but with his lips forms "ba." The listener invariably hears something in between, usually "da."
One experiment running in the lab matches up the speaker with the words being spoken by combining visual and aural data from a videotape.
By correlating the movement of pixels with the sound waves, it is possible to put closed captions beneath the current speaker in, say, a panel discussion, rather than just running them on the bottom of the screen and leaving it up to the user to figure out who is saying what.
