The land east of Auraria was purchased by Vice President John Calhoun, and he established the Calhoun Mine there.
Auraria, Kansas Territory (founded in 1858 by Georgia settlers in present-day Denver, Colorado) derived its name from this town.

In April 1859 Auraria was the site of a small convention of settlers with the intention of creating a local government out of Arapaho County, the western portion of the Kansas Territory.

Kansas territory, established in 1854, was in the national limelight during much of its existence, and a considerable number of books were published in the early territorial years concerning the political troubles there.
However, the rush was definitely of significance to the people of Kansas since they were in the path of some of the emigrants to the gold fields and gained trade from these travelers, and since the gold region was in the far western portion of Kansas territory.

Auraria received its name when a small group of gold miners left the town of Auraria, Ga. (now a ghost town) for the Kansas Territory and what is now Denver, looking for prosperity and gold.
Many citizens of Auraria left within a year or two of the town’s development to fight for the Confederacy in the Civil War.
Although Denver was aching for a center of higher education, the plan to develop Auraria as the site for the campus would force several hundred families and businesses to relocate, and was met with much opposition.

Auraria, hurting badly from lack of business and population, finally merged with Denver City on April 6, 1860, creating the combined city of Denver.
Although the area had basically been Union territory from the start, the current stalemate in the war was enough to allow Confederate troops into Colorado, which the Union countered with its own small detachement.

Feeling ignored by the governments of the Kansas and Nebraska Territories, Denver residents formed the Jefferson Territory, which went unrecognized by the U.S. Congress.
As a result of the raid, in 1865, John Evans was removed as Territorial Governor, and Colorado statehood was delayed for over a decade.
