The awards are given by the publishers of Australia to recognize the achievements of Australian science fiction, fantasy, and horror writers for adults and young adults.
The award is to honor and commemorate the illustrator of An Illustrated Comic Alphabet by Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon, 1859.
Established in 1966, the award is a citation given to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States.

The Aurealis Awards, established in 1995, are judged awards, and divided into five categories: science fiction, fantasy, horror, young adult, and children.
The Aurealis Awards were created, in part, to combat the block voting and the favouritism that has stripped the Ditmar of its credibility, but have, as is the case with all awards, come under their own criticism.
The Golden Aurealis suggests, to me, that separate genre categories are not necessary for the award—if it is possible for one story and one novel to dominate all five genres.

Although the editors of Aurealis hoped the Aurealis Awards would grow in significance and stature as they moved into their second year, the interest level shown has far exceeded our expections.
Other winners have used the Award in their publicity, and the editors of Aurealis lost count as to the number of times the Aurealis Awards were mentioned in major newspapers and magazines.
The judges in the 1996 Awards were once again outstanding and Chimaera Publications would like to thank them for their support.

His short story, Catabolic Magic, was joint winner of the Best Fantasy Short Story of 2004 Award; his recently released novel, The Black Crusade, took out the Best Horror Novel of 2004 Award; and, The Black Crusade also won the overall Golden Aurealis Award for Best Novel in any category of SF, Fantasy or Horror.
The Aurealis Awards are Australia’s equivalent to the Nebulas.
For the Golden Aurealis Award, the convening judge from each panel reads all the winners in all categories and joins a super-panel to decide a best-of-the-best winner.
