Haliclystus auricula is a funnel-shaped jellyfish up to 2-2.5 cm high with eight arms radiating from the mouth, connected near the tips by a thin membrane.
It is fixed to the substratum by a stalk that is the same length as the bell.
The main distinguishing feature of Haliclystus auricula is the presence of kidney-shaped primary tentacles on the membrane margin, between the arms.

In 1912 three cups were purchased, one each for Show Auriculas, Alpine Auriculas and Gold Laced Polyanthus, together with three medals and a die the total cost was £18-8-3d.
The 1940 show was the last to be held until the end of the Second World War, the 1941 show had to be cancelled due to the Coal Exchange where it was to held being destroyed by enemy action.
The word Primula was added to the society title in 1948 and we became The National Auricula and Primula Society (Northern Section).

This display of Auriculas and Primulas was put together by members of the Northern section at the 4 day Harrogate Spring show which was on from the 24th to the 27th of April 2003.
This is a close up shot of part of the Auricula Theatre part of the display, the Auriculas are shown in hand thrown terracotta pots that were specially commissioned by the Northern section for use in such displays.
Double Auriculas have made giant strides over the past 20 years in both quality, quantity and new colour breaks and Prima is a fine example of what is being produced now.

 SRGC Forum: Primula auricula wild hybrid?
On holiday in Switzerland last summer I saw vast colonies of Primula auricula in the eastern Berner Oberland.
Three in a row, one yellow auricula with farinose leaves, one pink flowered plant with efarinose (but not sticky) leaves and one pink flowered plant with farinose leaves.
The pink flowers were reminiscent of Primula hirsuta which I saw several miles away in the next valley but P. hirsuta always has sticky leaves and a more compact appearance than Primula auricula.
